Stuff Your Mom Never Said You'd Experience in Motherhood: Getting Sick {Giveaway}

When I was a child, and all the way through my teenage years, I ALWAYS got the flu. Always. It was usually in November, right around Thanksgiving, or January as soon as school started for the second semester. It never failed. Cold weather and I just don't get along really well.
Back then, I had my Mother. She was the one who woke at 1am to bring me medicine and a cold washcloth for my forehead. She brought me comfort. Today? Well, today I'm the Mom who wakes at 1 am to comfort aching children. These days, I can't afford to become sick because, for some reason, I've morphed into a Superwoman without realizing it and, for some reason, my children and husband don't get up at the wee hours of the morning to comfort me. Imagine that.The truth is, Moms aren't allowed to get sick. It's in the handbook.
You know the handbook, right?
Stuff Your Mom Never Said You'd Experience in Motherhood Handbook
1. If you start feeling sick, tell no one: Kids have an automatic reaction to Mom being sick. This will cause them to ask permission to do things you don't remember them asking and you DEFINITELY don't remember answering.
2. Airborn: You know, that stuff you drop into a glass of water that tastes aweful? Yeah. Drink it. It's your last chance to stay afloat. Your last chance to ward off the germs that are flying in and out of your house from small chubby hands, backpacks, and shoes. Use it. Often. Pray it does what it says it can do.
3. Invest in a good comfy robe that looks like a a stylish wrap: Seriously. You'll need to go to the bus stop, take kids to practice, answer the door, and make a trip to the store to purchase your own medicine and "feel good" foods. Canned soup will work, right?
4. Vitamin C: Take it. A lot. Juice form. Pill form. Whatever. You'll need it to boost your immune system.
5. Don't call your friends unless they are Moms themselves: They'll never understand how you feel like you're in a dark hole of fever and vomit, cough and aches, but the reason it's taking you twice as long to get better is because three children still expect you to cook breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You also have a husband who can't seem to find his shoes in the morning. Oh and his wallet. Oh and wonders why you didn't take his favorite slacks to the cleaners yesterday when you were covered with five blankets and shivering with no color left in your face.
5. DO call your friends who ARE Moms: You don't need words. Your weeping will get the point across. They'll pick your daughter up from school for you when the school nurse says that SHE is now sick. They'll burst in the door with sick child in hand, big pot of homemade soup, and an "on a mission" attitude to get you well and working. They're kind of like the clean up crew after a massive chemical spill.
6. Vicks Vapor Rub: This can be categorized as more of a Hispanic/Spanish/Cultural/MyOwnMother kind of thing, but rub Vicks vapor rub on your feet, then cover up with not ONE, but TWO pairs of socks. Apparently, the scent and cool menthol on your feet magically makes your brain feel better. Who knew?
7. Buy and TAKE medicine: You hate spending money on yourself, but the kids Tylenol in the medicine cabinet, is just NOT going to do to trick this time. If you're not going to go to the Dr., buy some good medicine that's going to work and tastes somewhat great.
8. Sleep: Take the preschooler to your parent's house. Send the kids off to school. Bid the husband goodbye (without his favorite slacks), and rest. Close your eyes. Cover up with your pink Snuggie. Breathe your Momma life in. Then breathe it out, at least until 3:00pm when the chaos arrives from school. Ok. Ok. Blog about it instead.
Have you read the handbook? How do you cope, as a Mom, when you're sick?
I wrote this, not for sympathy, but to simply laugh. I could go on and on about how Moms have it hard when we're sick, but the one thing that brings me comfort during the cold and flu season? Humor. I know, all too well, that getting sick means the kids might not be dressed in matching clothes the next day. The husband might need to step up with, or without, his favorite clothes washed, but if I keep a good sense of humor and attitude through the heartwrenching days of being a Mom with the flu, all will turn out ok. We'll survive and that's what matters.
The fine people at Vicks inspired me to write this post today. They've also given me a Vicks Nature Fusion Gift Basket in case I get sick again. They didn't just send me one, but they've got an extra for one lucky Momma Findings reader.
