4 Easy Ways to Switch to Whole Grain Foods {Giveaway}

Friday, January 27, 2012 Leave a Comment

Some of you guys might roll your eyes at this post, but I have seriously been changing my eating habits. I've found that by giving up soda and controlling my portion sizes has made a HUGE impact on my waistline. I also feel SO much better throughout the day.

These eating habits have also made an impact on my children. Instead of reaching for sugary soda and greasy potato chips (which I always kept around), they want yogurt with granola, or fruit kabobs, and even a nice bowl of whole grain cereal. As a Mom, I've found it hard to distinguish which cereal is healthy and which is not, but thanks to the white check on General Mills cereal boxes I can rest assured it has more whole grain than any other single ingredient. So, do you want to know which cereals are packed with whole grain? Better yet, want to win FIVE boxes of them?

I used to think how "boring" of a Mom I would be if I made my kids eat healthy ALL the time. I want them to enjoy the sweet things in life too, like a good cheese burger or sugary block of fudge. Today, however, I'm finding a balance between "treats sometimes" and "healthy all the time." It was a hard adjustment. To help you guys (in case you're anything like me), here are 4 easy ways to switch to whole grain foods.

  1. Start Early! The Dietary Guidelines recommend people get at least 48 grams of whole grain in their daily diets. Get a jump-start on the day´s nutrition by incorporating whole grain into your morning routine. For instance, when choosing cereal make sure whole grain is listed as the first ingredient. One easy choice is cereal with the white check, which have more whole grain than any other single ingredient.
  2. Make Simple Swaps. Choose whole grain versions of the foods you love. Great options include whole wheat pasta and whole wheat bread or even whole grain crackers. Also, try different types of whole grain. Use brown rice instead of white rice as a side dish at dinner or popcorn, which is a whole grain, for a snack.
  3. Don´t Judge a Food by Its Cover. The front of food packages provide good nutritional cues, but don´t forget to read the ingredients and check the nutrition label and side labels for additional health information. Cereals with the white check even include the amount of whole grain per serving on packaging.
  4. Make It Fun: To help with choosing products with whole grain, General Mills developed "Fast Lane for Whole Grain," an online educational game. Consumers can navigate virtual grocery store aisles and identify products that have whole grain as the first ingredient, with the option to enter a sweepstakes to win one of each of the 50 cereals with the white check.

Buy It:

You can find whole grain cereals with the white check at your local grocery store. Prices vary. Some of the cereals included are Cheerios®, Lucky Charms®, Cinnamon Toast Crunch®, Honey Nut Cheerios® and Total®. For more information on the importance of whole grain and a chance to enter the "Fast Lane for Whole Grain" sweepstakes, visit www.WholeGrainNation.com.

Win It!

Now for the fun part! One lucky Momma Findings reader will win a General Mills prize pack that includes all of the following (full) boxes of cereal:

  • Cheerios®
  • Lucky Charms®
  • Cinnamon Toast Crunch®
  • Honey Nut Cheerios®
  • Total®.

    You can switch to whole grain pasta - just always cook it for the longer times on the directions, that cooks the flour taste out of it.
