5 Easy Foods to Cook in a Dutch Oven

Thursday, November 3, 2011 Leave a Comment

Brrr. It's cold outside. You'll probably read that line, here at Momma Findings, only a few times a year because, here in Houston, it's NEVER cold. It might be "nippy" or "chilly" or even "frijo," but never just cold. Those are the words I'll use today. We've finally been invited to the Fall Ball and it's pretty nice to join the rest of the country.

So, now that the temps are FINALLY dropping here in Texas, I'm pondering a few ways to use my new Dutch Oven from H-E-B. Did you know they carry this amazing new line of kitchenware? It's colorful. It's practical. Heck. It has completely inspired me to try new recipes.

Momma Findings:

Alright, so H-E-B has this brand new line of kitchenware, namely called Cocinaware. Did you know that the word cocina means kitchen in Spanish? That's your Spanish Language word of the day, by the way.

So, when I'm in the kitchen I'm limited on time. I need something I can throw in the oven, or crockpot, or dutch oven and be done with it. The less action I have to do the better. It got me thinking about this beautiful purple dutch oven I received from H-E-B and what I can use it for.

I've never owned a dutch oven until now, so I got to thinking What do I even cook in it? Well, I've experiemented and came up with some easy-to-make recipes for cooking in a dutch oven.

1. Baked Apples: I've seen a variety on this, but I cored out the middle of small apples and placed butter and brown sugar in the middle. Then I put a stick of butter in the dutch oven along with a little caramel sauce. You can add in sugar, cinnamon, and even raisins. Bake for about 20 minutes in the oven at 350 degrees. It's SO good and makes your house smell SO yummy.

2. Spanish Rice: Now this was a stretch, however, I used my dutch oven over a gas stove. I browned two  cups of rice in olive oil, then added in water, tomato sauce, and spices (garlic, comino, salt, pepper). This was probably the BEST Spanish Rice I've EVER made, probably because of the heavy, tight fitting lid of the dutch oven.

3. Texas Chili: This is kind of a given. Simply brown your meat, drain, and put back in the dutch oven. Then add chili mix, onions, tomatoes and simmer. So good!

4. Shredded Chicken Taco Meat: I experimented with this because I really hated standing over a hot stove cooking, stirring, adding... ugh. Instead I threw about 8-10 medium sized chicken breasts into the dutch oven. Then I added taco seasoning, onions, and cooked at 300 degrees for about 90 minutes. The meat is SO tender you can pull apart simply by touching it with a wooden spoon.

5. Pot Roast: Now my all time favorite? Pot roast. This is so easy it hurts. Add in your favorite cut of roast. I like chuck roast, but shoulder works too. You can even use pork roast. Put it in your dutch oven, add in cut up potatoes, carrots, and onions. Empty a packet of Lipton Onion Soup Mix over all of it and add half a cup of water. Voila. Cook slowly at 300 for about 4-5 hours.

Buy It:

I'm totally rockin' the dutch oven these days. I hate you can't wash it in the dishwasher, but other than that it's been so great on days where I just don't have a lot of time to spend in the Cocina.

Oh and Cocinaware comes in all different shapes and forms. Mix and match the collection of pots, cast iron fry pans and Dutch Ovens with hand-painted plates, serving bowls and more. All Cocinaware items are unique, affordable and available only at H-E-B. Enjoy the modern look and taste the authentic results. Prices vary.
