Movie Talk: NEW Winnie the Pooh or Harry Potter?

July 15th deems to be a VERY busy day in theaters across the country. Two movies hit the big screen. You've got the magic wizardry of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and then you got the enormously-cute-adorable-you-just-want-to-hug-the-whole-hundred-acre-wood Winnie the Pooh Movie. I mean. Really? There's no comparison if you ask me.
All kidding aside, I know Harry Potter is hugely popular among families. I, however, have not read one single book (Don't stone me). I have ALSO only seen one of the movies. For personal reasons, I decided we would not be reading or watching Harry Potter until the kids were older. They are still so young and introducing them to dark sides, magic, and witchcraft well... I'm not ready for that until they can fully understand that, although depicted as fantasy, witchcraft IS real and, as a Christian Family, any practice of magic is certainly not Biblical.
Today, however, I'm not here to throw out all my beliefs to you and certainly not here to judge your movie watching. My kids are just not old enough to distinguish between fantasy and fiction at their age and certainly not going to understand that witchcraft is actually practiced in this world. It's such a fine line that I don't plan on crossing right now.
If you're a Christian Mother or Father, I'd like to know what you think. I'd like to know how you explain this to your children and, more importantly, at what age did you introduce Harry Potter? Or did you at all?
Okay, so let's get rid of all the seriousness for one second and let me ask the ULTIMATE question.... On July 15th, will you be watching Harry Potter or Winnie the Pooh? And don't answer that question until you see the clip below (seriously, I think this will sway your opinion):
Did you change your mind? No? Okay, well check out ME (Yes, yours truly straight from Momma Findings) recording the voice of Piglet. This will CERTAINLY change your mind.
Winnie the Pooh hits theaters July 15th!! Get ready folks.

Disclosure: This post made possible by Disney, who provided me with an all expense paid trip to LA for press coverage. Opinions, stated, belong to me and me alone and never wavered by products received nor compensated unless, otherwise, stated.

LOL I will not be seeing either on July 15. But I will be seeing Harry Potter some time in the theater as I have only watched the others on DVD
We will definitely be seeing Harry Potter, definitely not a decision we even have to think on. We are all huge harry potter fans and I love that I can actually take the movies and teach them christian lessons from them :) Well I say we, first it will be the parents and oldest until we deem scariness level for the other two. If we think they will be okay watching it as far as that goes we will see it again. WTP will have to wait for DVD. I wonder why in the world they released it the same day.
Becca and Toni- It looks like I have some Harry Potter fans here! :)
In all seriousness though, we aren't fans. My kids haven't read the books and neither have I. Frankly? Witchcraft is SO not entertaining to me.. just scary.
I'd love to hear y'all's thoughts on the movie though in comparison to the books.
See I had that same view about witchcraft in the HP series completely myself until I read the books. When I finally did I was absolutely upset at myself for not taking the time to read one for so long based on what other christians were saying.
I Subsequently watched Chronicles of Narnia, in which there is a witch and spell casting, there is a wicked witch in snow white & sleeping beauty, and if I am not mistaken in Lord of the Rings there is a wizard (Gandalf) so what constitutes it being okay for one movie and not for another.
The basis of the whole entire HP series is good verses evil with themes of sacrifice and redemption, doubt and faith. In fact JK Rowling said in an interview once "religious parallels I thought were always obvious" and I absolutely have to agree after reading and watching.
As a christian I absolutely believe witchcraft is real and that it is evil, but I also think I need to show my kids make believe isn't something to be scared of. And unless it is a book teaching them how to get into witchcraft (you get my drift) that fiction is that...fiction...false...a greatly written story. This series isn't about promoting witchcraft and wizardry (while yes they are wizards) but rather watching good and evil. I do think you have to have a child who knows the different between fiction and reality as well as wait until they are age appropriate as with any other movie/book out there we choose to let them read/watch.
The comparison between book and movie is absolutely amazing in this series to be honest. While no movie will ever be quite as good as the book this one does the books justice. They are very well done and stay very close to the story, though of course like most movies from books they do leave out some things I thought should be in there but that is personal opinion.
I hope you know this is all said in a Toni talking to Sara on the phone in a laughy voice tone LOL. Just wanted to share my experience from feeling exactly how you felt in your above comment to where I am at now. I hope that's okay ;)
Oh but again it really all boils down to convictions. Some people don't like to dress up on Halloween (or trick or treat) and Santa Claus doesn't come to their house so it's really all a personal opinion kwim that was just my personal view and thought on the subject
To me it's no different than the "force" in Star Wars. Just a story of good vs evil but actually has good lessons on how to treat people.
Sara, we don't encourage the children watching anything with witchcraft, the dark side anything. I guess that's what I didn't like about the Princess & the Frog (Disney), I loved the storyline but hated the fact they had such a strong evil spirits segment near the end. I guess I walked away hurt maybe because I "trusted" Disney to have better judgement. So NO my kids will not be watching or even reading Harry Potter books in our home. We have explained to my 6 year old why and she understands. Winnie the Pooh...oh yes!! :) (Who can say no to Piglet?)
