Marriage Matters: So Your Spouse Has a Few Quirks

Wednesday, July 13, 2011 Leave a Comment

I've been married for over 10 years now. I'm 30. Yes, I got married really young, but when you know that person is right for you, well you don't let him or her get away, right? I met my husband through a very good friend of ours. In fact, this friend was my best friend starting in High School and STILL, to this day, remains dear to our family.

But this post isn't about my Best Friend. It's not about how my husband and I fell in love. Dude. It's not even about the struggles we faced the last 10 years (you know which ones I'm talking about). It's about those small little quirks that you notice in a person. You know. They chew with their mouth open. They can only drink tea out of a glass cup. Things like that.

Last night as my husband and I were settling into bed, I caught myself unraveling the blankets from his leg.... like rampantly. Once I got him "untangled" I could finally sleep peacefully. He nudges me a bit and says, "What was that? You ok?"

Well, the thing is.... I do this thing. To fall asleep, I lay on my belly and wrap my left ankle around his leg. I kind of just "hook it". If my legs can't reach him because of a blanket or a child in the middle (Yes, we still have a wandering 4-yr-old who SOMETIMES ends up in our bed), well I can kiss a good nights rest goodbye. Don't get me wrong, I don't do this ALL night long.... just to fall asleep.

He's my comfort.

Okay, so that's one quirk. Another may or may not have to do with numbers. It's a really weird thing, but I can't set the microwave to cook for 2 minutes. It HAS to be 2:01. I can't set my alarm for 5:45 it HAS to be 5:46. In my pretty little head, I imagine that ONE extra second can actually help me to get more sleep.

It's my insurance.

Do you have something quirky like that? Something you just KNOW is abnormal, but kinda cute all at the same time? Well, at least your spouse thinks so, right? I refer to my quirks as endearing (as I watch my husband roll his eyes).

I want to thank you for sharing your marriage matters online. With almost 11 years of marriage behind us, we still go through the rought stuff, and it's nice to know someone else is getting through it!

Jeanne, thank you for such kind words. I've learned, through YEARS and YEARS of friendships across the country (we moved a lot), that I'm definitely not alone in my marriage struggles, so why not share them to bring comfort to others? :)
