How We Spent Earth Day 2011 {Scott Naturals Giveaway}

We've taken a commitment to reuse, reduce, and recycle, however, we've also taken the opportunity to talk our kids about gardening and where food comes from. Earth Day 2011 started with work in our established garden (thanks to Daddy) and talking about other fruits and vegetables we'd like to include.
As you guys know, we're participating in the 4 Week Scott Test Drive, so using these environmentally friendly household products have increased our awareness of what a green family really looks like.
The first thing we did on Earth Day was sit down for breakfast as a family and I showed the kids which herbs are actually I have growing in the window of our kitchen. We have Cilantro, Basil, Parsley, and Oregano. Oh, and we sported our new B Kind 2 Earth Shirts for the occasion.
After breakfast, we braved the Texas heat (Yes, it was really hot outside on Earth Day) and pulled weeds from our garden.
After all the weeds were pulled we took the notion of planting more vegetables to grow our very own food. The kids are amazed at how and where food comes from.
Earth Day provided me the perfect opportunity to talk to my children about recycling, including what we can recycle and how we can reuse. In addition, there is so much more you can do to help the earth such as reducing the electricity and water you use. We talked about shorter showers and turning off lights before leaving a room.

We live near a factory that always has a lot of waste (hairnets, bozes, etc) that blow arounf and into the street and neighborhood so we picked a bunch of that stuff up!

My work had a health, safety and environmental fair where we could bring in personal electronics from home to recycle. There was an electronics recycler accepting old electronics and would use them for parts or refurbish them and give to others who can use them.

We didn't do anything special for "Earth Day," because we try to live small, green lives every day. For example, we use reusable shopping, produce, and bulk bags--and use reusable bags everywhere, not just for groceries (there are some really cute bags that are great for department store shopping)

We made sure not to drive the cars that day. We took our bikes to the grocery store and anywhere we needed to go. It was pretty cool. I am doint his every weekend - it's better for the environment and good for you!
