Perfume Pick: Faith By Faith Hill {Giveaway}

Tuesday, August 31, 2010 263 comments

I'm a Southern Girl. Always have, Always will. If there's something that a Southern girl loves, it's her Country Music. I'll admit, I'm the biggest George Strait fan you'll ever meet and Dierks Bently? Well, let's just say he's right up there, but when it comes to my favorite Country female singer, Faith Hill makes my top 5. Why? Because I grew up on her music.

So, when I was asked to try her new fragrance. Faith by Faith Hill, well how could I pass that up? I love me some Country Music. I love me some sweet smelling perfume and if you put them together well it makes for a brighter day for this Mom Blogger. Plus, when my husband takes me out on a date, I can reach for the perfect "Date Perfume". Oh, you gals know what I'm talking about. We all have our favorite perfume that we save for date night.

Movie Talk: Fun Recipes for Family Night with Mickey Mouse Clubhouse

Monday, August 30, 2010 0 comments

Our Calendar is set and September 7th is marked as Family Night. My 3-yr-old decided he's save a few Mickey stickers for his brother and sister. We have our Printables awaiting, and, I have to admit, there has been some Mickey Bingo trash talk going on amidst the hallways of my home. Just sayin'.

So, with all the fun in store, there one thing on everyone's mind. What are we going to eat?. There can't be a family night without fun snacks, right? Today, I'm going to bring you a few of my favorites and hopefully you can share a few of yours that I can tuck away for our next Family Night.

The Wisk Project: Fighting Grass Stains in our Family Science Lab

As most of you know, I'm taking part in The Wisk Project, where I put stain lifting technology to the test in real life. I have a family of five, three of which are little people under the age of 8 years of age. Do you think I fight stains everyday?

When they were babies, it was the infamous baby formula and spit-up. That stuff was everywhere, especially on MY clothes. Nowadays, it's that one stain we all face, my Nemesis, the infamous grass stain. It's like my kids don't know how to play WITHOUT rolling in the grass! What's up with that? So, today I bring you into our dining room Science Laboratory and put that pesky stain to the test using a few tools, the best darn Lab Assistant a girl can ask for, and little bit of staining fight Wisk Laundry Detergent.

Music Monday: "Blink" By Revive - How Do You Love?

Over the weekend, my 3-yr-old gave me quite the scare. I've been told, by several people, that he is showing signs of diabetes. I laughed at the thought, but then I realized Wait a minute. He IS! Friday night I woke to tiny fingers tapping me on the shoulder and sweet words saying, "Mom. I'm just wet. How did I get wet?"

He never wets the bed, which is another sign of Diabetes. When I returned with dry clothes, that's when I panicked. His face was covered in blood, nose just gushing. This is the third time it's done that in the last few weeks. I, literally, held my hand underneath his nose while my husband ran to get a towel.

I cried myself back to sleep that night at the thought of him being sick and the thoughts going through my head led me to one conclusion It happened in a blink.

Health Tip: Wipe Your Child's Teeth Clean With Spiffies {Giveaway}

Sunday, August 29, 2010 30 comments

Taking young children to the dentist is never an easy task. The first time I took my now 8-yr-old son, he screamed as soon as he sat in the chair. Parents have the ever demanding job at teaching children how to care for their teeth, but how do you care for developing teeth in infants and toddlers?

Many parents don't realize that even though kids don't need to see the dentist until they're at least 2, developing teeth are susceptible to decay and cavities. I bet you didn't suspect, but tooth decay is actually the most common chronic disease of children in the U.S. So, I was encouraged when I discovered a really unique and simple way to introduce dental hygiene to young children, using Spiffies Teeth Wipes. Each wipe is fruit flavored and contains Xylitol solution, a natural ingredient that prevents cavities. I got the chance to try these with my 3-yr-old and it was quite the interesting outcome.

Faith for Kids: Hermie & Friends DVD "Who's In Charge Anyway?"

My husband and I sat at the dinner table, exhausted and defeated. I looked into his tired eyes and said, "How can ALL of this happen within one week? I don't understand." I often tell others that God will never give you more than you can handle. This week I had to tell MYSELF that. Then my favorite quote from Beth Moore came to mind You weren't picked on, beloved. You were picked OUT. God entrusted that suffering to you because He has faith in you.

This week everything that CAN go wrong HAS gone wrong and it's easy to wallow in my misery, cry, or feel defeated, but deep down I know He has a plan for me and my family. I know this because every struggle and every stronghold has been lifted over the years and good has come from it. and, although there will be more struggles to come, I know His plan is perfect. I have the faith to believe in it, but, as parents, how do we help our children understand that as well? How can we reiterate that God doesn't make mistakes and any struggle we face is there for one reason, and one reason only... because He is in charge. I, recently, found a great DVD for young children to explain just that. It's called Hermies and Friends Who's In Charge Anyway?

TV Talk: Curious George Season 5 Jumps on the "Hispanic" Bandwagon

Friday, August 27, 2010 0 comments

There's one thing my 3-yr-old is enjoying since his older brother and sister started school. His TV time. Say what you will about allowing children to watch TV, but we're a family who likes to relax after a long day or snuggle together early in the morning in our pajamas in front of our favorite show. Granted, I am no advocate of too much TV, but that's a whole other subject left for another day, another blog post.

My son's favorite television stations are (you can probably guess) PBS Kids, Nick Jr., and Disney. Sid the Science Kid has overtaken my house, but there's another fun character he can't get enough of. Curious George. It kinda makes me giddy, because I loved reading Curious George books as a child. In this technologically advanced era, my son can enjoy Curious George through books, television shows, movies, and computer games on PBSKids.org So, today we're excited that Curious George Season 5 premieres this Labor Day and it's got a Spanish twist that I can relate to!

Raising Boys: Athleticism Vs. Intelligence - How To Handle Sibling Rivalry

I jumped at the sound of the front door slamming shut. Then there he was. Standing in my kitchen. Mad. Fuming actually. My 8-yr-old son, clearly upset, tells me, "Mom, I'm going to just play on the computer. Is that okay?"

No. It wasn't okay. In fact, I marched him right back to door stating, "You are to never leave your little brother out there by himself, even IF your friends are out there with him." That's when I realized he was angry that his little brother had, once again, hogged all the attention. A faint shout of encouragement came from outside as I heard the other boys shouting, "Go Rudy! Hit it again! Hit it again!"

Movie Talk: Tune Into Disney's NEW Mickey Mouse Clubhouse "Road Rally"

Thursday, August 26, 2010 0 comments

Do you usually plan a Family Night at home? Ours are usually planned last minute, but when we make time to spend together complete with dinner, activities, and a movie, it makes for awesome family togetherness. Plus, it helps me "unplug" from my laptop for a few hours and enjoy my sweet babies.

Now that school is underway, I need to plan family activities more throughly to reflect everyone's schedules. What's next on our agenda? Well, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Road Rally of course, which premieres September 7th at 7pm/6c. This will be the perfect time to relax, play a little Micky Mouse Bingo with the kids. Winner gets to wear the Mickey Ears! Then, we'll grab up our finger foods, snacks, and tune into Disney Channel.

Preschool Fun: Spin Master Introduces NEW Moon Dough Play Sets

A few years ago, I just HAD to get my kids tons and tons of Moon Sand. I mean, how can they NOT like it. It's SAND you can MOLD! What's not to like? Well, my assumptions proved right and they absolutely loved it. My husband, on the other hand, did not. He stated that Moon Sand has taken over our house and made itself comfortable in every nook and cranny it can find. He was right.

So, when Team Mom asked me to review Moon Dough, the dough that never dries out, I thought, Well, it looks promising and it's not sand. They kids will love it! I was right, but did it barge into our home unexpected like your drunk uncle during the Holidays? My kids put the Moon Dough Barn Playset to the test and I tested the Moon Dough "Clean Up" Process. What kind of results do you think it rendered?

HEB Meal Maker Challenge: Mexican Breakfast Pizza

Wednesday, August 25, 2010 6 comments

I started this Meal Maker Challenge with H-E-B, ConAgra, and 9 other Texas bloggers. It started before school, so it was really quite easy to get creative and have the energy, however, school started on Monday for us and today? Well, today is Wednesday and I'm already so exhausted. So, I've scanned through some of Phil Lembert's time savers to get me through the rest of the week.

He mentions combining RoTel and chicken for a fast and flavorful dinner. Oh, how I love me some RoTel. I use it ALL the time. I mean, it wouldn't be Spanish Rice without it. Speaking of Mexican Food, I whipped up a pretty fast and flavorful breakfast for the First Day of School. I call it Mexican Breakfast Pizza. My husband wanted it to have a name something like Breakfast A La' Brian, but he wasn't the ONLY one who concocted this sucker. So, the name stands.

Back-To-School: Math Made Fun With Rubik's Cube

Tuesday, August 24, 2010 0 comments

I'll admit it. I have NEVER and I repeat NEVER solved the Rubik's Cube. In fact, it gives me such a headache, I usually just give up after 15 minutes of trying. My husband, on the other hand, can solve it within minutes and LOVES it. I think he secretly gets a kick at making me feel inadequate. He has a Math and Science kinda mind. I, on the other hand, have an artsy, creative, writer kinda brain. It makes for a very interesting marriage, let me tell you.

My hope is that our children get a good mixture of both my husband and I. You know, belt out an essay that puts my English Lit Professor to shame AND work at NASA as a hobby. All kidding aside, I've been giving the secret to solving the, ever popular, Rubik's Cube, thanks to You Can Do the Rubik's Cube and, my children and I want to share it with, not only their classroom, but all of you.

Local Findings: Summer Dishes for the Family at Carrabba's Italian Grill

This week was the official start of the 2010-11 School Year for my children. We've enjoyed our Summer and my husband and I, wanted to devote one special night to celebrate the end of lazy days and splashin' waves.

Last Thursday, we sent our 3-yr-old off to hang with his grandparents, while we took our oldest two out to eat at one of favorite places, Carrabba's Italian Grill in Webster. They are going to a new school and we wanted to sit down, enjoy a good dinner, and let them know how proud we are of them. It was a good time to hear their concerns, worries, and excitement about the upcoming school year. We also reminisced about all the fun times we had this Summer: Sea World, Water Parks, Swimming, etc. Plus, I was on a mission to check out their $10 Summer Meals.

Music Monday: "Brand New Day" By Joshua Radin

It's a Brand New Day. The sun is shining bright. The house is clean. The kids are at school. *Gasp* Yes, today was the First Day of School and it's actually put a little hop in my Giddy Up.

Actually, it's put me in a REALLY good mood because, for the first time in MONTHS, I have structure back in the house, but am I fooling myself? Does it create MORE stress? Well, yes, but if you know me AT ALL, you know I thrive on structure, order, and schedules. My brain works better when I have a list of things that will happen or need to be done.

Faith for Kids: Noah's Arc Printoons Storybook Activity Kit

Sunday, August 22, 2010 2 comments

This morning we woke up late due to a long night with my 3-yr-old. When one of us becomes sick or we can't make it to church due to other reasons, I like to tune into our local Christian Radio Station and pull out a craft for my children to do. This morning was no different. Our hearts were open to learning about God, even though circumstances kept us from being at church.

One of our favorite stories in the Bible is Noah's Arc. Children love learning about Noah and how and why he built the arc. Not only that, but my kids are fascinated by zoo animals, such as giraffes, elephants, and lions. I knew this morning would be a perfect time to do a little finger painting so I pulled out Noah's Arc Printoons.

IHOP Celebrates 25 "Rooty" Years {Vintage Tee Giveaway}

Saturday, August 21, 2010 35 comments

Oh, how I love me some breakfast, pancakes to be more exact. I can eat pancakes for every single meal. That's probably why going out to breakfast with my kids and husband is my favorite thing to do. It isn't often we get to do this due to Daddy's work schedule and my oldest two in school, however, weekends and Holidays make it perfect to enjoy good food and family time first thing in the morning.

Some of my favorite breakfast places are Cracker Barrel, Denny's, Chick-Fil-A, and IHOP. Rooty Tooty Fresh and Fruity BABY! Okay, Okay, I'll calm down, but I wanted to let you guys know about some exciting news straight from the International House Of Pancakes. Back-To-School: Safely Secure Your Locker with WordLock

Friday, August 20, 2010 3 comments

I used to have this reoccurring dream when I was in High School. I walk up to my locker and can't remember the combination. Have you ever had a dream like that? Maybe it was my anxiety prone personality coming to life, but I was always afraid I wouldn't be able to get inside my locker and get to class on time. And if you know me, you know I don't "do" late. It's not in my nature and I can't function if I'm running late.

Believe it or not, I used to think Why can't these dang locks have letters instead of numbers!? I could open my locker faster AND it would be easier to remember the combination. Well folks, imagine my giddyness when I discovered WordLock padlocks! Granted, it's over 10 years late to help this girl out, I'm sure it'll be great for tweens and teens going Back-To-School this year.

Find the Perfect Photographer for Your Family {$2,000 Smile Baby Contest}

I still remember my family's VERY first professional photography session. I was tired of going to Sears Studio because my children hated sitting there forever, which, in turn, turned into meltdown city. I FEARED getting their pictures made. When we moved to Memphis, I made friends with a Photographer. My family got to pick the setting, the kids were happy running around, and she captured breathtaking shots, that I still love today.

The one question I kept running into when people saw my pictures was Where did you find her? Is there a website where I can find a photographer near me? Back then (almost 5 years ago), there wasn't a place I could direct her to, that I knew of. Today, however, there's a one stop shop for parents looking for baby photography tips and photographers in the area, www.babyphotographers.com.

Back-To-School: Get Ready for Kindergarten Month {Dinosaur Train Prize Pack}

All month long, I've been bringing you all kinds of posts about Back-To-School. This year, I've got an incoming 3rd grader and 1st grader, while my 3-year-old preps for his entrance into Pre-school next year. I've got a soft place in my heart for all the Mommas who have children entering Kindergarten, because I've been there. It can get pretty emotional, so I've partnered with the Jim Henson's Dinosaur Train to celebrate “Get Ready for Kindergarten” month in August.

There are many things that can be done to help prepare children for kindergarten. Working on basic academic skills such as writing his/her name, arts-and-crafts projects to get your child more comfortable using scissors, and making shopping for school supplies a fun experience by letting your child make some choices of their own can make a difference in a creating a positive Kindergarten experience.

Back-To-School: Start a Writing Project With Your Kids

Wednesday, August 18, 2010 197 comments

My countdown continues as we make our way into the last week of the Summer. School begins in less than 5 days and there is so much to do. How do you keep up with it all? Well, I'm a list maker. You'll find tons of lists throughout the house of To-Do's, To-Buy's, and To-Post's. Hey! I'm a blogger so you wouldn't expect any less, would you?

Zebra Pen, leaders in the writing instrument industry for more than 110 years, asked me to check out some of their school supplies this year. With mechanical pencils, markers, and pens, there is something for everyone in the family, even Elementary Children. With our Cadoozles in hand, we set out to write down all we were feeling about the upcoming school year. It was a great way for my kids to practice their handwriting and it gave me, their Mother, an inside look at what they were most excited and worried about.

HEB Meal Maker Challenge: 20 Minute Enchiladas

Welcome to another week of the HEB Meal Maker Challenge here at Momma Findings. I've had a lot of fun reading all the ideas from the HEB Bloggers. Definitely lots of recipes and quick How-To's to help us Parents transition to the busy School Routine. Eek. I have only one more week and ours begins.

This week, I'm all about diving right into my roots. Mexican Food. My Mother makes the BEST Enchiladas and I, often, use her recipe. The thing about her Recipe for the Best Enchiladas ever? It's so easy your 1st grader can do it. Last week I was sitting in her living room just chatting, when she tells me, "You know you can use frozen Taquitos to make Enchiladas, right?" And that's how my 20 Minutes Enchiladas recipe was born.

Trigger Tuesday: Quit Smoking For Good with EX {Quit Pack Giveaway}

Tuesday, August 17, 2010 11 comments

Become An EX
I still remember it like it was yesterday. My Father asked me to get his cigarettes off his dresser for him. I had a decision to make. Should I bring them to him or chunk 'em in the trash? I remember my Dad getting a little angry with me. I often wondered, Why can't he just quit?

Years later, I fall in love and marry a man who, you guessed it, smokes. Granted, he keeps his smoking outside the home, I still worry about his health, along with the health of my Dad. My husband tried to explain to me how hard it is to quit smoking and how I couldn't possibly understand.

Is it really that hard? Or can an online community dedicated to smokers help you become an EX?

5 Ways to Go Back-To-School With Purpose

Monday, August 16, 2010 1 comments

DaySpring School Supplies
This time, next week my two children will be sitting in a classroom on their first day of school. We're completely done with shopping and checked off our list of things to buy. That's when we realized we wanted to go one extra step and give back to children who might not be as fortunate as we are.

Thanks to DaySpring and Collective Bias, I am blessed beyond measure, to do just that. Today, we marched into Wal-Mart Supercenter, armed and ready to buy backpacks, supplies, and a few extra things for two children in need. We were asked to create a backpack for one of our children and one for another, but since we have wonderful family who have helped us on our Back-To-School shopping, we felt led to make two backpacks for two children in need.

Faith for Kids: God's Promises for Girls and Boys

Sunday, August 15, 2010 0 comments

"Mom! I can't find my Bible!" I hear this every Sunday. In fact, if I don't hear it, I get a little worried because it means he's left it in one place all week, not opening it at all. So, today when I heard my son cry out, it was music to my ears. At least he WANTS to have his Bible for Church and uses it throughout the week and, for that, I'm truly blessed.

My 3-yr-old has been asking me for his own Bible. Knowing he's not quite ready yet, I've got a few other solutions that might suffice. I want him to learn about God daily and I pray he can grow into his Faith and truly trust Him for everything. I've discovered two books that will help my children develop their Faith and help me, as a Parent, teach them Scripture, called God's Promises for Girls and God's Promises for Boys.

Craft Idea: Blast Off With the Mini Shuttle Imagination {Giveaway}

Back in April, I let you guys in on a really cool way to have fun indoors on rainy days. Today, however, we're not trying to escape the rain. We're trying to escape the HEAT. Houston has been smoldering. Throw in the humidity and you feel like you're walking into a sauna by simply checking the mail.

So, what do you do with the kids on those "Heat Advisory" days? We like to throw in a little craft time and use our imagination. Lately, my 3-yr-old is all about Space and blasting off to far away places. He walks around like a Robot (I blame Dora for that one) or pretends to meet friendly aliens on undiscovered planets. He even takes his toys and stuffed animals along for the ride using Crafty Kids Mini Space Shuttle.

Preschool Fun: Spin Master Introduces NEW Pop On Pals

My 3-yr-old is not like most 3-yr-olds. From the beginning he's always felt older to me, not because I'm one of "those" Moms who thinks their child is smarter than yours, but because his interests have made me feel that way. His older brother and sister have had a profound effect on him and he has never WANTED to do the preschooler thing. He doesn't watch Nick Jr., like my older two did. He doesn't play with preschool toys, but instead wants to play the Wii or, better yet, throw a ball around outside.

Maybe I just didn't or HAVEN'T given him the opportunity to be a preschooler, but one thing's for sure I can't EVER predict what this child will like when it comes to books, movies, toys, or food (Okay. Okay. Give him any kind of meat and he's pretty darn happy). So, When I was asked to try Pop On Pals, I hesitated. Would he like it? Would this toy even get played with?

Parenting: Good Cop/Bad Cop - Which Are You?

Wednesday, August 11, 2010 5 comments

We're slowly perfecting our bedtime routine in response to the School Year beginning in less than 2 weeks. My children and I have discussed how things will be changing around here including chores, bedtime, and responsibilities.

So. Today. Bedtime 8:40pm.

Each day we are going to bed 10 minutes earlier than before. I had to head over to my Parent's House tonight and returned right at 8:40, only to be greeted with a chocolate covered 3-yr-old and the oldest two plopped right in front of the television. Awesome. I'm not mad, but I feel defeated. Why do I have to constantly be the "Bad Cop" in this thing we call parenting?

Bake Life Sweeter With an End-of-Summer Celebration {Betty Crocker Giveaway}

We've been preparing for Back-To-School here at Momma Findings, but I don't want to completely dismiss the last 2 weeks left in our Summer. I mean, the Texas Heat isn't going anywhere so why should I?

We've done the road trips, the water parks, and the lazy days. We're 5 shades darker than we were back in May and somehow a little sad that the Summer has just flown by. Although prepartions for school are stacking up, we plan to enjoy what's left of the sunny days with family. I've come up with a great way to Celebrate the End-of-Summer with your family. One word........ Cake.

The Wisk Project: Laundry Detergent Then and Now

Monday, August 9, 2010 0 comments

I have to admit, I never paid much attention to how much work my Mother put forth when it came to laundry. I, simply, threw my dirty clothes in the designated dirty clothes basket (sometimes didn't even do that) and expected them to magically wash themselves, fold themselves, and sometimes hang themselves. In hindsight, my Mom worked really hard to have clean laundry for all six of us.

Now, I'm a Mom of three children all under the age of 8-years-old and I grow frustrated. My son uses his shoulder sleeve to wipe his mouth . My toddler spills spaghetti all over his lap and thinks mud pies are the coooolest. My daughter "gets creative" with her crayons and markers and my husband.. well.. let's just say he sometimes misses his mouth. Although I struggle to keep my family's laundry clean, there is one big difference between how I do it now and how my Mother did it then..... Technology.

Music Monday: The House You're Building by Audrey Assad

Today marks the day. School, officially, starts in two weeks and today we're getting ready. We've been Back-To-School shopping and only have a few things left to buy. We've got our official Welcome letter from our new Elementary and today marks the countdown.

We're cleaning, organizing, and establishing our routine to start the school year off right. From recipes, schedules, and clothing I'm working on building a house for my children to feel comfort in. They'll be spending half their days away from me and what I wish to provide them is a sanctuary where they can feel rested and accomplished, but will it do the same for me?

Bloggers Unite at #HomeHer10: Top 10 BreakOut Sessions

Friday, August 6, 2010 13 comments

Thursday started with me trying to get my arse out of bed. The idea of my absence at BlogHer10 consumed me, not because I was overtly sad, but because I felt like I was supposed to be there. I've never played hookey before and this weekend had become the epitome of "Cutting Class" for me.

Not only that, but I was sad that I created a mental picture of hanging out with the most awesome blogger ever in NYC and it was now gone. We'd wait for hours for lost luggage, get car sick in the cabs, cry at the "Mean Girls" we encounter, find ourselves in the "Swoop and Surround" by college guys who think we're younger than we are. Wait. That's only in Vegas.

Anyyyyyyyyyyway, I decided to do something about it. No more would I be left out in the cold. I'd attend a conference made for bloggers too awesome to attend BlogHer10.

HEB Meal Maker Challenge: Meal Ideas That Give Back {$100 Prize Pack Giveaway}

Tuesday, August 3, 2010 110 comments

Thanks for joining me in the 6-week-long HEB Meal Maker Challenge. This is week 2 and, so far, I've enjoyed hearing all of your creative ideas for breakfast. I've learned all kinds of ways to make scrambled eggs. Definitely be experimenting with all of those mix-ins!

Today, I want to talk to you, not only about Meal Ideas, but about making a difference this school year. I just, recently, moved back to my Hometown in Texas, after living in Tennessee and North Carolina. While, I'm grateful for the experience and culture change, there's one thing for certain... I missed Texas.

Music Monday: "Beautiful For Me" - What Is True Beauty?

Monday, August 2, 2010 0 comments

Yesterday, I told you guys about the newest VeggieTales DVD SweetPea Beauty. This is such a sweet parody to Sleeping Beauty and really helps young girls understand that beauty comes from inside your heart. Accompanying the sweet tale, there is a beautiful song sung by Nichole Nordeman Beauty For Me. I listened to it, in the quiet of my morning, and it painted a picture for me. I pictured God holding my chin and speaking to me softly, "Has anybody told you you're beautiful?

Movie Talk: NEW VeggieTales "SweetPea Beauty" {Giveaway}

Sunday, August 1, 2010 61 comments

We've always been a "Veg Head" Family. At a very young age, my daughter became clearly connected to everything Bob and Larry had to say ...or actually sing. All of their silly songs pulled my sweet girl in and she became my ultimate VeggieTales lover. Of course, it made my Momma heart so happy to have her enjoy God's Word and, often, repeat it and live it out loud amongst her friends.

Just yesterday, Big Idea Inc. released a new DVD in the VeggieTales series called SweetPea Beauty: A Girl After God's Own Heart. This movie is a parody of the story of Sleeping Beauty and delivers a powerful message to young girls about outward appearances. Although, my daughter is now 6 1/2 and quickly outgrowing VeggieTales, I knew it could speak to her about what God says about true beauty.
