Toy News: Tegu Launches LIVE Building Instruction Using Social Media

Friday, November 12, 2010 Leave a Comment

The first night of, the recent, Daylight Savings Time change, my family found ourselves indoors earlier than usual. In fact, all the kids were in shock that it was dark and just only 6:00PM. Puzzled in what we would do the next few hours, I walked over to my "Magic Shelf" and pulled out our new Tegu blocks.

All night long, we built absolutely nothing, but had more fun than we've had in a long time. My daughter built herself a microphone and announced each and everyone's creations. My husband tried building a roller coaster. My son built a piano and a dog. My younger son, bless his sweet heart, built a gun. Then another. Then another. What's up with boys and making stuff into guns? Overall, we had a blast, but it would be nothing compared to fun we had Wednesday afternoon, when Tegu Live was launched.

About Tegu Live:
Tegu building blocks are revolutionary. They connect by powerful hidden magnets and to demonstrate the endless possibilities of Tegu's innovative blocks, Tegu Live has launched from November 10, 2010 through December 25, 2010. Tegu Master Builders will respond to viewer requests -- logged through Twitter -- to build whatever the viewer can imagine. As visitors queue-up, status updates for each construction will be relayed via social media, and every creation will be archived and accessible to anyone wishing to view the Master Builders at work with Tegu. Users can also click on archived creations to replay recorded videos and to witness the steps necessary for specific design re-creation.

Momma Findings:

I thought it best to SHOW you the fun we had instead of just TELL you, but before I do, I've got to say that there isn't much to these blocks. They are wooden blocks that magnetically click together. Everyone loves blocks, right? Throw in gravity-defying ability and these blocks jump to a WHOLE other level that my family can't get enough of.

Classic wooden blocks with magnetic snapping ability

Gravity defying ability

Missile to save the world
(My guy is SO working at Nasa when he grows up)

Musical inspiration

Doggie Companionship

The ultimate castle
(Yes, we moved the structure on the left and placed RIGHT on top)

Night at the Amusement Park

Endless Possibilities. Endless Playtime.

Momma Improvements:

I need to say this BEFORE I bring attention to one minor suggestion: We played for endless hours with these blocks. My kids, heck my HUSBAND, can't get enough of them. There is one thing I want to mention, however.

The magnets are rather strong and, when playing with a big group of them, they snap together very quickly. This is absolutely mind boggling and pure fun, but there were a few times my son's skin was pinched from the "snaps". This is nothing major, he didn't cry, but I felt it worth mentioning so you can be aware if you're playing with really young children. The skin on my hands were pinched a few times and it didn't hurt really bad. It was more of a shock to me. Suggestion: Monitor really young children, until they get the hang of the blocks.

Final Findings:

Adding in my improvement above, Tegu blocks, BY FAR, are our pick for 2010 Toy of the Year. Yes. You read that right. The blocks provide endless playtime and encourage creativity. They are easy to clean up and we've used them to hold art on the fridge AND make sweet notes on Daddy's truck. Speaking of which, some were left out in the rain. The next day they STILL worked just as good without rotting the wood. Using Tegu Live instructions and real time video building, we always have ideas on what to build. As an environmentally driven company that supports reforestation initiatives in the depleted forests of Honduras, Teguʼs electronic instruction manual format saves trees and eliminates waste.

Buy It:

Tegu blocks are available in three different set sizes: The pocket pouch (8 pieces great stocking stuffer), the discovery set (26 pieces) and the original set (56 pieces). There are three color options: Beach, Mahagony, and launching Nov. 15 Tegu Tints. You can purchase online at www.tegu.com or stores such as Pottery Barn Kids and FAO.

It Gets Better:

Building their own manufacturing plant in Honduras, Tegu has a triple goal of creating jobs for hundreds of men and women, sending kids to school who currently do not attend, and are working replenish a sadly abused rainforest. Socially responsible.

I've said few words about Tegu, mainly speaking in pictures, because my words mean nothing with you SEEING it with your own eyes. I encourage you to follow @Tegu on Twitter, send over YOUR request for him to build, and see it for yourself. Check him out LIVE below, but to get the FULL effect, with Twitter requests and chat, visit www.tegu.com. Tegu Genius Builder builds every day starting at 1pm EST until Dec. 25th 2010.
