Halloween Health Tip: Make Brushing Teeth as Fun as Halloween Candy

Friday, October 29, 2010 Leave a Comment

My children are in that crazy countdown mode, where every hour on the hour they remind me that Halloween is inching a little bit closer. Early in the month, I was all gung ho about it, but now that my oven has decided to go on strike, well that's kind of made me a little nutso. I was SO ready to bake up all kinds of goodies to add to our sugar drenched Trick-Or-Treat candy, but the cards just weren't in line for me. Now that I think about it, I'm a little relieved because I can spend more time with the kids AND our teeth aren't infused with quite the overload they could have had.

Did you know that 600 million pounds of candy is purchased in the US in the month of October alone? Parents, including myself, are left to deal with the tooth decay that inevitably appears when sugar and bacteria from our mouths collide. Thanks to Colgate Kids, I'm taking the time to talk to my children about the importance of good oral health care and having fun while doing it.

About Colgate Kids Oral Care:
Colgate Kids Oral Care offers a systematic approach for strong oral hygiene with coordinating brushes and pastes for all age groups.

Momma Findings:

I've really got to give credit to Colgate Kids line of products for helping me discuss and reiterate how important it is to brush daily. Kids, especially mine, really lose interest when brushing. Every morning my kids go INTO the bathroom, pick UP their toothbrush, put ON the toothpaste, and-then-quickly-faster-than-you-can-blink-brush-their-teeth. No joke, they're in there for a whole 5 seconds and are, all of a sudden, done.

We received a fun package from Colgate Kids, that gave them a reason to hang out a little bit longer and appreciate the art of teeth brushing. These brushes and pastes are aimed for children ages 2-8 reinforcing strong oral care habits. Dora the Explorer, Spongebob Squarepants, and new to the line of products Bakugan have earned their place in our bathroom.

Colgate Kids Line:

Each Licensed Kids Character line includes Anti-Cavity fluoride toothpaste, a Battery-Powered toothbrush and a manual toothbrush for kids.

  • Anti-Cavity Fluoride Toothpaste: Clinically-proven cavity protection that strengthens and protects developing teeth. The mild Bubble Fruit flavor - a classic favorite! - and flip-top cap encourage kids to maintain healthy brushing habits.
  • Manual Toothbrushes: Perfect for growing kids with developing brushing hbits. The toothbrush features a non-slip cushioned handle fit for small fingers, and an oval shaped head to protect children's sensitive gums.
  • Battery-Powered Toothbrushes: A small rotating head to gently brush away plaque while the multi-height bristles easily clean hard-to-reach areas.

Making Brushing Fun:

There are a few ways you can teach kids oral habits and make it fun along the way.

  • Stickers: When I was first teaching my kids about teeth brushing, I used a fun chart. We got a sticker for washing our hands, brushing our teeth, flushing the toilet, etc. Once they filled up their charts, they got to pick a small prize out of the treasure chest.
  • Make it Personal: Colgate sent me a set of coordinating paste and toothbrushes, one for each child. Little did I know that they WANT that. They WANT their very own toothpaste to match their toothbrush with their own unique character or interest.
  • Give a gift: I, above all, know it can get pricey to buy battery-operated toothbrushes and the matching toothpastes for 3 children. So, I make it fun by giving them these special items during Holidays such as Halloween, Valentine's Day, Christmas, etc. It's also a useful gift for other children in your life. Trust me. Their parents will thank you.
  • Talk about it: My kids are passionate about reading. Why? Because we talk about the benefits, often. We talk about escaping into another life, briefly, through the pages of the book. Same goes for brushing teeth. Talk about different ways to brush longer and more often. Songs they can sing in their head to keep them brushing the recommended time or you can even talk about the NEXT character toothbrush they want and how they can achieve buying it.

Buy It:

Colgate products can be purchased at stores nationwide such as Target, Walmart, and even Amazon.com. Toothpastes retail for the suggested retail price of $2.79, while the manual toothbrushes are $2.49 and $3.99 for twinpacks. Look for Battery-Powered Toothbrushes sell for $5.99.
