The other night, my husband and I got to talking about boobs. Yeah, what an opening liner for a Tuesday morning. Nevertheless, the conversation went from a pain I was having to the seriousness of Breast Cancer. Why? Because I haven't had a breast exam in the last 4 years or so. I got to listen to the lecture for about 5 minutes, before the crude and then the predictable smirky "guy joke" came out Well, I can give you an exam. Ummm..... How about no?

I joke this morning, because I'm lacking in brain cells due to only having one cup of coffee, but breast exams are becoming more and more important as I grow older. Probably because I fill more than a C cup after having kids, but that's for another day, another post. That being said, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Just in the last year, both my Aunt and a dear friend of mine were diagnosed with Breast Cancer and they kicked it's ass. Now, that's no joking matter, but a sign that we should all do our part in raising awareness in our community, family, and online social circle. Together there will be a cure and thanks to programs like Hanes Design and Buy and it's Pink Collection, the financial support can grow extensively.

I joked at the beginning of this post and I, secretly, hoped you wouldn't judge me for making light of the seriousness of breast cancer. I, of all people, understand the severity and how it affects women across the globe.

I joked because, I'm a bit ashamed that I have let it go 4 years without having a breast examination. FOUR YEARS! That's not only irresponsible, but it also decreases my ability to detect early. So, today, I'm urging all of you amazing women to become a little more self aware of your breasts with signs of what to look for and precautionary steps to educate yourself. So, the question remains in a lot of young women, including myself, what do I look for when examining my breasts?

Breast Self-Awareness:

Except for skin cancers, breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, but it can be successfully treated. Screening tests can find cancer early, when it’s most treatable.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure® recommends that you:

• Know your risk: Talk to your family to learn about your family health history and your provider about your personal risk of breast cancer.
• Get screened: Ask your doctor which screening tests are right for you if you are at a higher risk. Have a mammogram every year starting at age 40 if you are at average risk. Have a clinical breast exam at least every 3 years starting at 20, and every year starting at 40
• Make healthy lifestyle choices: Maintain a healthy weight. Add exercise into your routine and limit alcohol intake
• Know what is normal for you: See your health care provider right away if you notice any of these breast changes:

1. Lump, hard knot or thickening
2. Swelling, warmth, redness or darkening
3. Change in the size or shape of the breast
4. Dimpling or puckering of the skin
5. Itchy, scaly sore or rash on the nipple
6. Pulling in of your nipple or other parts of the breast
7. Nipple discharge that starts suddenly
8. New pain in one spot that doesn’t go away
