Welcome to the Scholastic Children's Dictionary Back-To-School Blog Tour. I've partnered with Scholastic and 15 amazing bloggers to bring you all things Back-To-School and I'm excited to be stop #2 on this awesome tour. I know, you're probably thinking Is she off her rocker?! It's still Summer! Let's not stay in denial Mommas. I'm actually counting down the days until school starts. Anxious? Why, yes I am.
Today, I'm talking literacy, books, and encouraging your children to enjoy reading. Scholastic is a name I trust when I look to purchase new books for my children and they've developed a Brand New Children's Dictionary that has my 8 and 6-year-old eager to discover the world around them.
About the Scholastic Children's Dictionary:
Why I'm so impressed:
Let's face it. Our children are growing up in a digital world. Everything can be "Googled" within seconds. It makes me a little sad that my kids didn't even know what a reference book really was until the Scholastic Children's Dictionary landed on our step. It was then that they sat for HOURS looking up words, brushing up their grammar, and discovering countries in the map section. Their favorite? The list in the back with the ALL the Presidents of the United States. This dictionary is SO updated that you even see our current President, Barack Obama listed.
That's one thing I really loved about this reference book, is the fact that it's tailored to kids with new and updated words and colorful pictures. The first thing they looked up was the word "Video Game". Right next to it was a picture of a child playing the Nintendo Wii. Scholastic did a great job at bringing the book directly into a child's mind and keeping them engaged.
Seeing my children "take" to a book so quickly brought back memories of myself as a child. I was in LOVE with reading (still am). I remember seeing a friend of mine read The Diary of Anne Frank and watching her expression made me run out to the library and check it out. I WANT to pass down my love for books and adventure to my children, but they have to make that decision on their own. The only thing I can do is provide the means through library trips, purchasing new books, giving them the environment to read, but most importantly talking about it. There's nothing better than to jump into a book series WITH your child and go along for the journey.
Buy It:
The Scholastic Children's Dictionary can be purchased from the Scholastic Online store for the suggested retail price of $19.99, however, it's on sale NOW for only $13.99.
Win It!

About the Scholastic Children's Dictionary:
With exciting features, accessible definitions and helpful illustrations and photographs throughout, the new Scholastic Children’s Dictionary is the essential resource that belongs in every home, classroom and library.
The 2010 edition of the Scholastic Children’s Dictionary features more than 1,000 full-color photographs, simple sentences, illustrations, and diagrams as well as newly commissioned maps of the world, the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Central America. The dictionary also includes guides on grammar, punctuation and idioms and simplified pronunciations created with real kids in mind!

What a great giveaway! when I was a kid, I would read pretty much anything I could get my hands on. I loved Shel Silverstein and Madeline L'engle, and I also loved the Fudge books by Judy Blume. My 10 year old prefers Captain Underpants, Harry Potter, and pretty much any "Boy's" book that talks about farting and other bodily functions. My 6 month old loves having her story books read to her. We love Guess How Much I Love You, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, and I Love You Forever. I am also 15 weeks pregnant again, and would love this package for all 3 of my kids. Thanks for the chance!
I loved reading when I was little. One was The Rainbow Fish. I don't have a child yet, but my friend's little one has the book Where The Wild Things Are and I'm def. making the kids around me into little readers if I can help it! :)
