Nestle Summer Block Party: 7 Ways to Have Water Fun On a Budget

Friday, July 16, 2010 Leave a Comment

You ever have so much fun with friends at a party that you don't want to leave? Well, that's how I feel today. I'm sad it's our last day of the Nestle Summer Block Party, but I had so much fun with The Not-So Blog, Cutie Booty Cakes, Classy Chaos, and 24/7 Moms and all of you guys that I know it was all worth it. Plus, I've gotten to know so many of ya'll on the Momma Findings Facebook Fan Page that I can always chat with you over Drumsticks Sundae Cones anytime!

So, all week long I've talked to you guys about Summer Fun that won't break the bank. To re-cap, Monday we talked about music fun indoors. Tuesday was music fun OUTdoors. Wednesday we discovered places where KIDS EAT FREE and Thursday we found ways to save when going to the Movies with the family. Today, it's water fun. Oh, I love me some WATER FUN!

Friday Fun:

We love us some water fun in any way, shape, or form. Be it Sprinklers, Kiddie Pools, or Slip N Slides, my family can't get enough of splishin' and splashin'. Today I'm going to let you guys in on how we have water fun all on a budget.

  • Water Balloons: I've actually forgotten about this form until I moved back home to Texas and my sister brought them out at a cook-out. They are painfully fun! We usually grab up a few bags at Family Dollar. They have the spouts included making it easier to fill. You've spent about two bucks and you'll have loads of fun chasing each other outside.
  • Backyard Pools: To save on the cost of entrance at local pools, why not splash outside? You can purchase a kiddie pool these days for next to nothing or opt for a bigger easy set-up pool to fit the whole family.
  • Slip N Slides: Omgosh, these have gotten so cheap it's not even funny! You can purchase, once again, at the Family Dollar, plug it into the hose, and you've got all day fun.
  • Water Guns: I was never a fan of these things until my kids were older. Nowadays you can buy crazy water guns that shoot miles away (okay, maybe not that far). We usually go with off-brand guns from Family Dollar. They work just as great as Super Soakers. Don't forget to buy little ones the handheld guns so they can join in the fun too. Oh heck, we just hand our 3-year-old the water hose for defense.
  • Toy Bath: Some of my kids toys get pretty filthy. For those without batteries, we take them outside. Bring in the bubbles, sponges, and soap to wipe 'em down clean in storage tubs. You'll get the toys clean and have a splashin' good time.
  • Boat Making: Practice making boats with various crafts and objects you find around the house. Fill up a storage tub (or even a bucket will do) and let them test the boats out. If you have the kiddie pool set up, have a race!
  • Local Pools: If you just HAVE to get out, visit your neighborhood pool for low cost entrance. My little town just opened a Water Park called Pirate's Bay and, we felt, buying a Season Pass would be most effective since we'll probably be living there everyday for the rest of the Summer. Well, I'll be honest and say my Mother-In-Law bought the passes for us which makes it the PERFECT budget savvy activity for our family. Don't ya think?

Where to Shop:

I know it's the middle of Summer and we've got Back-To-School on the brain, but I wanted you guys to take notice that I'm a big fan of dollar stores, especially Family Dollar. When you're a family of five, there are so many ways to have fun in the Summer all on a budget thanks to stores like this. We kicked off our Summer-On-A-Budget with Family Dollar and want to bring all of you guys in on what we bought:

We live in an apartment complex that has a really nice pool --we love to play with the giant foam pieces from the dollar store (they look like a giant straw) I hold one end and my husband holds the other and they go back and forth. We also play on the grass with squirt guns (from the dollar store) I don't like guns--so I prefer the guns to look like seahorses or dolphins.

We like water guns and at home sprinklers as the economy can put a damper to things.
No games just super soaking and things like that, hose fun.
For summer products I like shopping at Big Lots, Family dollar or smaller department stores.

We have water fun in my mom's pool using an assortment of floats and rafts. The most fun we've had this year was to form a train and run around the pool until we'd made a strong current. Then we walked backwards against the current. I bought all the pool toys at Walmart this year.

For our summer water fun we plan a day at the local Rec pool or we play in the little pool at home. On days when we're overrun with extra energy we go to the park to play and that always includes some time in the water play section.

There is a pretty big in-ground water fountain in our city's down town area that many children, including my God-daughter and God-nephew, are taken to play.

My sister and I usually get Summer items at Target. They have a lot to offer in the "dollar section" when it comes to jump ropes and balls. Otherwise, we just go to their toy section.

    main entry:
Question #1 - Do you play special games, go with the classic sprinkler, or go to a Water Park?
Answer: My 6yr old grandson is with me everyday and loves water & as fun as parks are they are costly if you want to cool off everyday. And my whole front yard is a long steep hill so I bought 3 differant water slides at Family Dollar (love shopping there to save $) and I hooked all 3 water slides together down the hill for one continous water slide & each has differant features one has a pool at the bottom the other has water sprinkling from its end too as well as the sides so he has lots water under & over him as he glides down the fun wet adventure. One of the waterslides came with a float so we put baby oil on the bottom off the float that sends him reeling down with fast fun.
Question#2Where do you shop for Summer products (water guns, sidewalk chalk, etc)?
Answer: As I said we love Family Dollar so I shop there for the big items like the waterslides/floats/waterguns/googles/sunscreen lotion & swim trunks then I go to dollar tree for the $1 smaller items like water balloon toys etc & frizzbies (which make great sliders too for going down the water slide (try it). thanks

Oh! You didn't mention one of our favorite water activities! Sidewalk painting! You get a bucket of water, an old paint brush and a patch of sidewalk or driveway and "paint" pictures using the water.

We bought a small pool off of Amazon this summer so we just stay home and chill out in the pool and we also have a sprinkler for the lawn that my daughter loves! I usually shop for summer toys at Walmart or Target---sometime Rite Aid and Walgreens if I see stuff on sale :)

We have done several things over our years of raising kids...when they were small, they loved the little blow up kiddie pool, our town has a wonderful waterpark now, I had boys so waterguns in the backyard was an option, we live in a community with beaches so sand and water options are at hand as well as playing with beach balls, frisbees, etc. and at one time we went with the sprinkler thing.
We usually shop at WalMart or Target for summer products

We go for the water sprinkler around here. Kids get just as wet as they would at the water park and it's a whole lot cheaper. Plus they can play other games like hide and seek, tag etc...if we are home, have more friends over and a better choice of food and treats. We do all our shopping at Dollar Tree. Every single thing in the store is $1 and they have great selections.

We have a pool so the majority of our water time is spent in there. Though the kids do love a good water balloon fight and run through the sprinkler.

I love the Dollar Tree and Target for water toys. The kids are usually rough on them so I don't want to spend a lot.

We have a boat, so we have lots of fun in that. But that certainly isn't a budget way to have fun, the boat is a money pit! Cheaper ways we have fun are water gun fights. My husband is the biggest kid with these, he loves to sneak up on the kids and dose them with water.

I generally shop for summer products at the end of the season and check the clearance items at every store, especially target, family dollar and walmart. Then I put them away for the following year.

I use a yard sprinkler for kids - and hose for me when i am topping off goldfish pond.

There is a great variety store her in southern WI called World of Variety, just like an old fashioned five and dime, complete with a couple of aisles of $1 deals. We get a lot of our playtime stuff from them

I don't know about special games but we love to run through the sprinkler at home because it's convenient and easy. We'll also go to parks and waterparks but that's not going to happen as easily or as often.

We get most of those supplies from Walgreens.

We live in a rural area--not close to a water park. Sometimes we go to Splash! a wave pool about 45 minutes from our home. and a few years ago, I took my kids up to Wild Waves up in WA. We all love water play. If we are stuck at home, running through the sprinkler, squirt toys, and water balloons all create a lot of fun and relief from the warm weather.
We buy summer products wherever we see a good sale (at the local Bi-Mart, otherwise we need to drive into Corvallis or Eugene to shop)
