Raising Girls: American Girl Launches Shine On Now *Giveaway*

I'm discovering that raising girls is heartbreaking, yet satisfying and sweet all at the same time. If there's one thing I appreciate about my 6-yr-old daughter Abby, it's her spirit of goodwill and willingness to help others. It melts my heart to see her share her things or give unexpectedly to friends in need. She has a generosity that reaches beyond her immediate ability and, as someone who knows her heart, I believe she'll only become more giving as she matures.
A few weeks ago, I spoke of how sad I was that Abby stopped wearing dresses. She is no longer my preschool aged girl, but an intelligent and intuitive 1st grader learning about the world around her. Some of which she is learning revolves around the charities and how, girls like her, can make a difference. Today, American Girl wants to unite girls, everywhere, to contribute and help give clothes, books, dolls, and money to charitable organizations by launching Shine On Now.

What Is Shine On Now?
Shine On Now™ is a new charitable initiative that harnesses the collective power of girls to help others in need. Through Shine On Now, American Girl is calling on girls across the country to help the company give $1 million in clothes, books, dolls, and money to the following four organizations: Kids in Distressed Situations, Save the Children, National Association of Children’s Hospitals and Related Institutions, and National Wildlife Federation. Beginning July 13, 2010, girls can visit shineonnow.com to contribute a free ‘star’ to the effort. The goal is to collect one million stars by the end of the program on July 31, 2010. In addition, for every star a girl contributes (she can donate up to 100 each day!), her name will automatically be entered in a daily drawing to win a new My American Girl™ doll.

I want to nominate my daughter Regan. She is 10 years old and is involved in her church youth group and book club at her school. Regan has a big heart and has been the teacher's helper in her class the past two years with the autism students in her class. She helps theses students when it is time to get ready for library or to leave at the end of the day. She also got assigned a special need child as her book buddy this year. Her 5th grade class gets books buddies from the 2nd grade class every year that they read to. It was a great match and the two of them thoroughly enjoyed each other all year! Regan loves American Girl dolls and I know she would be thrilled to win this prize!

When I was diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago, it impacted our family. My daughter, who was 7 at the time, wanted to help other children whose moms were diagnosed with cancer by providing them with a stuffed animal or other gift. She started a toy drive at her school and we hosted a party where all of the guests were encouraged to bring an unwrapped toy to be donated. She invited girls from her cheer, hockey and dance teams to join in. She collected hundreds of toys and we delivered them to the local cancer center. I am so proud of her for her kindness and compassion.

I nominate my daughter. She is a wonderful, beautiful person. She works very hard at school, is wonderful to her friends and is an example to her peers as far as the way she treats others. She always encourages her friends who might doubt themselves and takes under her wings those kids who are teased by others. I am very proud of the person my daughter is. She truly deserves to win an American Girl doll of her own as she embodies the spirit of The Shine on Now campaign.

I want to nominate my daughter. She volunteers at the local no kill shelter every week. She participates in the adoption clinics the shelter has. She also visits a local assisted living facility to spend time with the elderly once a month.
monster6236 at gmail dot com
My daughter is not involved in very many activities, but starting next year she will be in more. She goes above and beyond because even at her age she has compassion for others and is always willing to help people out. She will often stop and help people without prompting, such as helping someone in the store pick up something they dropped. She helps with many chores, even at a young age. And it is amazing to see her make decisions, not to benefit only herself, but keeping the feelings and wants of others in mind. The cutest thing is how much she takes care of her younger sister. For her birthday, she received two Zhu Zhu Hamsters (different styles) and automatically, without thinking about it, she hands one to her sister and says “this one is for you!” She is constantly sharing with others around her. She has compassion for animals and a desire to help the environment. I am proud of the way she is growing up and look forward to watching her help many others as the years progress!

I would like to nominate my younger sister, Madison. She is such an active part of our community and has done so much to help so many people. First off, about 5 years ago both me and my youngest sister were diagnosed with type one diabetes and Madison then went on to further learn about the disease, since then she has participated by setting up fundraisers at her school for the JDRF or Jouvenile diabetes research fund, raising up to five thousand dollars a year over the past 3 years until we moved and switched schools last year. She also has been a volunteer tutor at her school as well as volunteering babysitting hours at our local church up to 12 hours a week and nearly 30 during the summer. She also volunteers her hours at Feed my starving children, an organization which packages healthy and nutricious foods and sends them to third world countries. Finally, she has been setting up signs in nearby parks and trails about dogs littering on the trail after our own dog (lets just say) had an experience with some of it. Madison is a wonderful person on the inside and out and deserves this doll as an appreciation for all of the things that she has done for our community as well as my own sister and me.
THis would be great to give my little niece, she is just a baby but the American Doll would be somthing that would be special for her when she gets older.

I would like to nominate my daughter who is 10. She is active in our church and Bible club. She's always the first to befriend any visitors and rarely meets a stranger. This summer she's befriended a relative of the neighbor's who is visiting for the summer. It doesn't bother her that he mainly speaks Spanish and she speaks very little. They've still became fast friends.
She's also a help around the house and a big help with her little brother. She's really big on making sure we compost everything possible. She's also appointed herself in charge of recycling in our house.

I nominate my daughter. This last year she has had to go through alot. In this last year my husband deployed overseas for a year to Kuwait(he is back now),not only did she have to go through that I had my neck fused and will be having more surgeries on my back this next month. We don't have the money to buy the things she deserves because I am not able to work. We are struggling month to month. I would just like to be able to get her something just for her.

I would nominate my daughter's best friend. Oh she's such a sweet girl. My daughter and another of their friends have American Girl dolls, and M does not have one of her own. Their family of 6 immigrated here from Denmark & are the sweetest people, really hard working, but with 4 kids, you don't have a ton of extra cash. (Heck, I couldn't afford my DD's American Girl doll, Nana got it for her!) When M comes over, she wants to play with my DD's doll non-stop, brushing her hair, changing her clothes, etc. She's read all the books.
M has a big heart and a great work ethic. We started a volunteer group of girls who go & pick up trash along our river bed, and then we fish afterwards. M is always out front, cheering the other girls on. She drives us all to work harder.
M may not have been born here, but she's an American girl through & through. I joke sometimes that we can't send her back to Denmark, because she sounds more like a CA girl than any of the CA girls I know! lol
When I suggested to my DD & M that the neighbor lady might need a little help watering her lawn, M was on it in a flash. She brings library books home for an elderly lady down the street. We take her with us when we volunteer at the animal shelter & she started a food drive for the animals with my daughter.
M makes & sews her own outfits for her dolls, and makes them for my DD's dolls too. Not a week goes by when we don't find a tiny newspaper wrapped present on the porch. On May Day, the girls hung flowers on the door handles of every house on the street, all before 6am!
I love M so much, she's going to be just an amazing person. She never once asks what's in it for her, but asks what more she can do. I would love love love for her to have an American Girl doll to "fit in" with the other girls. If I could afford it, I would get it for her myself. I am thankful every day that my daughter has such a great girl from a great family as her best friend. I always trust that they are going to make good decisions & making them together makes it a little easier to go against the flow of tween life.
Thanks for this opportunity! Sorry for the huge post! There was more I wanted to say!

The girl I would like to nominate has a huge heart of gold. She enjoys helping and playing with the younger kids at the child care center. She would drop anything to help someone. Through her Girl Scouts group and her 4-H group she has had the chance to reach out to others in our community and learn how amazing it is to help others. Her interests include music, horses, books, and making movies. She is a beautiful person and I am very proud to call her my daughter.

My daughter is still young to be volunteering in her community but she is a great help to her mommy, daddy and brother. She also loves to help animals. I would love her to have this to serve as a reminder to help others. This would be her first AG doll.
I am eager to find out who the winner is. Has it been announced yet? My daughter asks me 20 times an hour if she won the doll! :) Thanks so much for this awesome giveaway and for the chance to win!

Our grandaughter is autistic. Three years ago, her family got involved with Autism Speaks and along with friends started the Walk Now for Autism, Sacramento. Collette and her friends have walked each year, as part of Collette's Crusaders. Last year, she asked her whole kindergarted class to walk with her. Love it! Over 75 people donated/walked on her team.

I would like to nominate my four year old daughter. She sang in church today and helped with the offering. She has come to me spontaneously several times and asked if she could give a special toy to one of her visiting friends. She loves to meet new people and play with anyone and everyone. I am so proud of her open and welcoming spirit. While she is still a little young to participate in many organized volunteer organizations, we are working in that direction. Every year we ask her friends to donate art supplies to the local moms club (www.summervillemoms.com) instead of bringing presents. She has visited the local animal shelter to play with animals and love them for a few minutes, so they are not alone all day.
Her most recent obsession is telling everyone that they are THE BEST mom, dad, friend, or “stephen” (eg) in the world. Well, she tells my husband that he is the best daddy in the whole wide CITY. That is just too cute to correct. *smile*
We are collecting material to make some special pillow cases for kids in the children’s hospital network that is supported by ShineOn. My daughter is going to use fabric paint to paint special designs on some of them. We are going to organize this as event for several of her friends to participate in. She can’t wait to make a pillow that will make someone feel better!
While I certainly don’t want her to grow up too fast. I can’t wait to know the person that she is destined to be. I am so happy that she is my child. I can’t wait to see the good that she is going to bring into this world.

My 8 yr old daughter volunteers to teach and model social skills to children with autism, because her big brother has autism. She is incredibly patient and understanding, and finds ways to reach the kids through songs, games, and just sitting quietly beside them. She volunteers with autism sibling support groups and shares her feelings about having a brother with autism who cannnot communicate nor care for himself. She is an amazing open, loving and giving child who would probably choose to share or donate this doll if she won! Thank you for an opportunity to honor and recognize her contributions to making the world a better place for children with disabilities.
I would *LOVE* to win this giveaway for my little girl! She is three, going to be four soon, and already loves playing with dolls! My favorite doll growing up was American Girl, and I am So excited about sharing American Girl with my little one! I can't wait to play with them with her :) She is already such a ray of sunshine, and a very beautiful girl inside and out! Her positive spirit is her way of helping those around her. She loves to share and play with others her age! Thank you for the great giveaway! Amanda
