Video Game Review: SpongeBob's Boating Bash for Nintendo Wii

Tuesday, March 9, 2010 Leave a Comment

My family loves spending time together, especially playing our Nintendo Wii. Although, we continuously vote Wii Bowling as our favorite past time, we are constantly looking for new Family Friendly games to shake it up a bit. There's only so many times I can take getting beat by a 7-year-old, before it starts affecting my self confidence.

It's all about competition, friendly of course. So, when we were asked to check out THQ's newest Wii Game SpongeBob's Boating Bash, I knew the kids and I would be up to the challenge.

About the Game:
Crash 'N Bash with your favorite SpongeBob character in this exhilarating, fast-paced demolition derby style party game full of excitement for the whole family. Players drive around in cars...er, boats competing within wacky arenas throughout Bikini Bottom to ultimately be the last boat standing! The story draws upon one of the most popular events in the TV Series which is SpongeBob’s never ending quest to earn his coveted boating license. In the game, SpongeBob is tricked into a D.R.I.V.E. course by a shady Shark character to earn his license and is taught the WRONG way to drive.

Features:
  • Demolition Party Bash pick up and play with friends anytime in multiplayer mode and compete to become the las man... er boat standing.
  • Bash, Crash, & Demolish your way through SpongeBob's world competing in loads of hilarious arenas
  • Customize your boat with over 100 different options
  • Choose & Drive as your favorite SpongeBob character, 9 total
  • Develop Wacky Driving Skills avoiding obstacle & hazards, and yes, even driving backwards
Unique Wii Features:
  • Over 100 possible boatmobile combinations
  • Mrs. Puff is a playable character in Wii only
  • Player Awardables
  • 4 Player multiplayer (split screen)
Momma Findings Family Thoughts:

I've mentioned before, that we're a Gaming Family. Our favorite past times involve playing Wii games together or snuggling in bed with our Nintendo DS. Of course, it could never take the place of a good book, however, it's what we enjoy.

As we played SpongeBob's Boating Bash, it reminded me of one of our other favorite games, Mario Kart. Replace the racing cars with boats, replace the roads with the ocean floor, and the similarities are right on. Besides, mirroring our favorite game, this game brings our favorite event of Spongebob's life, earning his boating license, onto the video game screen!

My children got a kick out of picking and customizing their boat, with the "Triple Threat" winning out, according to my 6-year-old daughter and the "Swampboat" entertaining my youngest. With the Wii version, you can experience the 4 player split screen, which my 7-year-old absolutely loved. Blame it on his need to trash talk, but that's neither here nor there. We also discovered that Mrs. Puff is only a playable Character on the Wii, not on the DS version. You can't have a boating game without that woman, can you?! Apparently, "Mom, should be Mrs. Puff!!" in every game. Go figure.

Nevertheless, as a parent, I enjoy the fact that it's rated E for everyone, with only wacky driving and mild cartoon violence, like Mario Kart. I mean, when will you EVER have a banana peel to throw out the window to slip the driver behind you? Oh..... Wait. Last week, I actually DID have one. Weird.

Buy It:

SpongeBob's Boating Bash for the Wii hit store shelves March 2nd. To purchase yours you can visit Amazon.com for the suggested retail price of $39.99. It's also available for Nintendo DS & DSi.

Win It!

Oh, since we are BIG fans of Family Friendly Games that we can all enjoy on game night, I'm going to venture and guess you are too! So, we've got your chance to win SpongeBob's Boating Bash for the Wii!

I like Sponge Bob himself, he is cute, and funny. But, I think it is more of a teen-young adult show. There are more appropriate shows for younger children.

patrick is my fave, and yes, we let youngest watch, i think it's fine for kids

My favorite character is Plankton. Yes, my kids are allowed to watch Spongebob. I'm not a big fan of all the bad words (stupid, idiot, etc.), but I like that Spongebob goes to school, has a job, is a great friend, silly, loves life, and is all around a good character.

Squidward is my fave. He cracks me up - he is always whining. Yes, I let my son watch it and I watch alongside with him every once in a while. The characters are funny and clever and it's harmless fun.

1.) Who is your favorite SpongeBob Character?
Patrick because, he is so goofy!

2.) Do you allow your child to watch SpongeBob? Why or Why Not

Yes, I do because, I also love spongebob. It's a funny cartoon that brings smiles to all of us

  • Sonya said:

I like Gary because he's cute. I do let my kids watch SpongeBob, but they don't choose to very often.

Patrick is my favorite. He's just too cute. I don't find the show offensive in anyway, so my kids watch it, and they enjoy it.

  • Miss Potential said:

I love Gary and yes -- I think it's all good fun and the slightly more debatable jokes tend to go way over kids' heads anyway ;)

my grand kids just love spongebob, to the point where I had to make our grandson a spongebob costume last year.

1.) Who is your favorite SpongeBob Character?

I'm partial to Mr. Krabs. My kids like Patrick Star and Spongebob, of course.

2.) Do you allow your child to watch SpongeBob? Why or Why Not?

I do let them watch it. Its a clean well-intentioned show. And I get a kick out of watching it too!

  • k-team said:

I think Patrick Star is my favorite character. And yes, my kids can watch Sponge Bob. They completely understand that the things you see on TV and movies are "movie magic".

  • Marc said:

My favorite character is Squidward as he acts exactly like I would around Spongebob! I do allow my kids to watch it but only in moderation as it has no redeeming qualities in terms of learning or life lessons.
