Pop It, Lock It... Polka What It?!

Friday, August 28, 2009 4 comments

When I was a teenager (a LONG time ago) I recall a High School dance, where the Macarena was ALL the rage. HEY! MACARENA!

Today, we've got a new rage and it's called:

The Hoedown Throwdown

Yeah.

It's got children of ALL ages Poppin' It, Lockin' It, and Polka Dottin' It! I mean, even my dear friend, who just happens to DJ on the side, learned the moves. We were thrilled when he called us up and asked if we wanted to learn. Being that my children are 7 and 5, I knew they'd jump at the chance to learn from DJ Kevin! Plus, when he threw in Pizza and good friends, well I couldn't say no. Check it out:

This new wave of dance moves and TV Shows are just creepin' up on me. It's like I'm not cool anymore and I, definitely, have no idea what's "In" and what's not. Do you remember my Achey Breaky Post? Who knew Billy Ray was no longer the mullet country singer?! My 5 year old whispers to her friends, "My Mom. I love her, but she doesn't know what's cool."

Ok.

Not Really.

So, here's to a new school year, a new list of faves, and this Momma learning all the moves to the Hoedown ThrowDown. Maybe I'll be as cool as these girls:

Wanna learn the HoeDown ThrowDown? This is a great "How To" Video:

Oh WAIT... HERE'S the "How To" Video:

Adidas Shoes Make Back-to-School Cool

Thursday, August 27, 2009 0 comments

It's the most wonderful time.. of the YEAR!!!

I'm singing the songs of Back-to-School, as my two children hit the hallways. This year I am a Momma of a 2nd grader and Kindergartner, with a toddler at home wondering when HE'S going to school. Check out how excited my son is about the School Year:

We've done all the shopping. Gotta have the perfect shoes. Gotta have the perfect backpack. Gotta have the perfect lunchbox. The list goes on and on. In past years with preschool, I've gone for the Buy One Get one 1/2 off sales. Famous Footwear is definitely famous, due in large part, to this sale. Moms, like me, wait for this particular sale to stock up on famous brands for our "famous" kids.

This year, I'm happy to work with one of those Famous Brands, Adidas.

There's a New shoe called Tech L2 that has students thinking Cool!

About the Tech L2:

TL2 combines comfort, style and the essence of Adidas innovation. It delivers comfort that can be enjoyed around the house or on an outdoor excursion. The upper shoe material is a combination of synthetic and mesh and the 3D cushion provides maximum comfort. The TL2 takes fashion inspiration from Adidas sports heritage along with today’s mainstream trends and combines them into the ultimate shoe for comfort and active style.

Adidas sent us our own pair to try out and my husband gave his, first hand, opinion on this very popular shoe for Back-to-School.

An all black shoe with blue accents, this is a shoe that can be described as very unique, yet functional. Hubby says, "I feel stylish being that it's a mainstream, trendy shoe." This is unlike his regular sports shoe.

The Adidas Tech L2 also comes in a white/black style, pictured below:

After wearing this shoe for just over a week, we're not at all surprised at the durability and quality. We've trusted Adidas for years now, and trying the Tech L2 just proves to us that we always can. Hubby says, he's happy that he can wear these shoes casually with jeans or out and about playing sports with the kids.

Momma Improvements

-Fit Although the Tech L2 is comfortable, we did find that it's a bit narrow on some sections of the shoe, such as the heel. Keep that in mind if you have wide feet.

-Price I don't usually spend $75.00 on my children's shoes, since they are so young and growing at a rapid pace, however, for older teens this would be a great quality shoe to last them throughout the year. If you take advantage of the Famous Footwear Half-Off sale, you can rack up on savings.

Buy It

Available in both Men's and Boy's sizes, you can purchase the Tech L2 at your local Famous Footwear store, however, they are so popular that they are sold out online. Retailing for 75.00 make sure you take advantage of the Buy One Get One 1/2 off sale. Click here for a retailer near you.

Shabby Apple Defines the Little Black Dress

Wednesday, August 26, 2009 0 comments

We all know how essential the "Little Black Dress" is to our wardrobes. Something about slipping on that perfect dress makes us feel confident and sexy. Recently, I needed just that, when I attended BlogHer '09 in Chicago.

Thanks to Shabby Apple, I was able to glam it up at the Nikon Party in Chicago. Check it out:

Pictured with Sheena from Mommy Daddy Blog

Shabby Apple sent me the Antiquated Dress and boy did I fall in love!

From the Shabby Apple website:

This dress has limited edition Indian lace and is fully lined with stretch-acetate lining for comfort. This dress has a stand-up collar, a V-neck and cap sleeves. The skirt's hemline hits mid-calf. This dress also comes with a four inch wide black satin sash that ties at the waist. The dress has a side zipper and fits snugly to flatter your figure. This dress travels well.

One word describing this dress is: Elegant

I felt so "Suave" in lace and heels. This dress comes with a silk black sash to wrap around your waist, which became the perfect accent to the ensemble. If you're looking to splash a little color, Shabby Apple the Crimson Wave red sash to accompany the dress for Holidays such as Christmas, New Years, and even Valentine's Day.

Momma Improvement

As amazing as this dress is, I do have a few improvements I'd like to let you in on.

-Sizing On the Shabby Apple website it states: This dress FITS GENEROUSLY. (Consider ordering one size smaller than you would normally order.) I found this not to be the case, as I had some sizing issues. Usually wearing a Large, I ordered a Medium, but found it to be REALLY tight. The fabric material does not stretch, so I'd say order the size you would normally order.

-Price I'm all about shopping on a budget and living inside my means. This dress retails for 93.00 and the additional Crimson Wave red sash is 18.00. Once you factor in shipping, you're well over $115.00. Although, this dress is totally worth it, it's hard for me, with a family of five, to spend the extra money.

Although, there were a few Momma Improvements, I like the fact that I can shop at Shabby Apple for both myself and my daughter. Shabby Apple specializes in little girl and Tween dresses such as the Garden Party Dress (which I happen to love):

I'd like to thank Shabby Apple for sponsoring this amazingly elegant dress for me on my BlogHer '09 trip. I received so many compliments, asking me where to find one, who sells it, what's the website. I was proud and excited to tell them it comes from Shabby Apple.

Buy It

To make a purchase, head over to ShabbyApple.com, where you'll find the classic black dress for your next date or sweet floral dresses for the your little princess.

Cool Care Packages for Your College Student

You've agonized over the dorm room deco, laptops, books, and tuition. Your child is college bound and experiencing many holidays and events away from you. I've discovered a great way to stay "Connected" with your child when they get sick, on their birthday, during exam time, or even just because.

The Amazing Box-O-Box

I was lucky enough to review one of their popular boxes, Box-O-Birthday.

From the Box-O-Box Website:

Now that birthdays with 'Pin-the-Tail-on-the-Donkey' & "Spin the Bottle" are behind us, it doesn't mean that when your college student is away, you can't have him/her feel special on the big day.

The Box-O-Birthday care package comes complete with a Pinata, party hats, a Box-O-Box microwavable cake and lots more! After all, if you can't THROW a party, you can surely SEND one!

This care package includes the following:

* Box-O-Box Piñata
* Box-O-Box Birthday Cake
* Silly String
* Birthday Balloons
* Silly Party Hats
* Birthday Taffy
* Happy Birthday Chocolate Bar
* Party Streamers
* Happy Birthday Banner
* Tons of Birthday Candy
* Noise Makers

Although, it wasn't any of our birthdays, my children and I enjoyed looking through all the goodies! Putting on the silly party hats, munching on the yummy candy, and laughing with the silly string and noise makers.

The box itself cracked us up! Once you open it there are "instructions" and excerpts to give just about anyone a smile. Check it out:

If you're anything like me, birthdays and holidays seem to sneak up on you. Box-O-Box has you covered shipping your care package within one business day. Orders placed after 3pm EST will ship the following business day.

Momma Improvements

I absolutely love Box-O-Box and the variety of packages they offer, however, I do have a few Momma Improvements I'd like to point out.

-Price The large boxes average at 49.99. For a bigger family on a budget, such as us (family of 5), 50.00 is a bit much. You *might* be able to find some items you'd like to send and ship it for a bit cheaper. Again, I wait till the last minute so Box-O-Box is a perfect option if budget isn't an issue.

-Arrival Most of the candy in this box is of hard consistency (Lollipops, Tootsie Rolls, Taffy), however, there is a big chocolate candy bar that was completely melted when we received our box. It didn't make a mess in the box itself, but was completely inedible. Living in the Texas heat, chocolate is so hard to ship.

Although, I felt the need to let you guys in on a few improvements I would make, Box-O-Box would definitely be an option for families to stay connected and celebrate together, even miles away! In fact, grab up the Cool Dorm Stuff Box to start the year off right. They EVEN offer Box-O-Mester, a care package sent all semester long!

Buy It

To make a purchase head over to www.boxobox.com. Prices vary.

WIN IT!

One lucky winner will receive Movie Night Box-O-Box, which includes:

* Box-O-Box Popcorn Tub
* Real Movie Theater Popcorn (Large)
* Milkduds
* Sno-Caps
* Goobers
* Sour Patch Kids
* Whoppers
* Junior Mints
* Lemon Heads
* Twizzlers
* Swedish Fish
* Ju-Ju-Bes
* JujyFruits
* Raisinets

Trend Alert: Short Shorts on the First Lady?

Picture from MSNBC

Health Care Reform
Unemployment
Pollution
Poverty
Short Wearing First Lady

All problems worth discussing, right? First Lady Michelle Obama has been ridiculed by many for wearing shorts on their recent vacation to the Grand Canyon. GRAND CANYON people! Isn't that the place that makes the Sun shiver?

Okay, Okay, not really, but if YOU were on vacation at the Grand Canyon, would you be in shorts or pants? Other pictures show President Obama in pants and that's where the debate starts. Why wasn't he in shorts?

I'm a TX girl. A Gulf Coast girl, to be more accurate. It's hot here and shorts are a must if you want to survive the heat and humidity. Granted, some don't choose to show their legs, but I'm one that would never judge if they did. IT'S HOT! However, the tiny, itsy-bitsy, shorts? Well, it shocks me.

Michelle Obama wearing "short shorts" sparked my interest because I just had this conversation with my husband as we walked out of a movie theatre last weekend. We ended up behind a Teenager in tiny shorts. One swift move and her butt would have given us a unexpected flash. I told him, "When I was in High School (10 years ago), I would have gotten an ear full from my friends if I dressed like that."

It's all about modesty and accountability, which, in my honest opinion, a lot of young women do not have these days. Teenage girls can still look great and respect their bodies at the same time.

The First Lady, expressed her individuality by donning shorts of her own, in a tasteful and classy way. It's allowed or did I miss that in the How to be a First Lady Manual? Hey if she was wearing shorts like the ones below, then I'd be worried.

Dear Michelle Obama,

You look great! You do it with class and I applaud you!

You Have Questions, Momma Has Answers 8/19

Wednesday, August 19, 2009 1 comments

Every Wednesday, I'm on a mission to answer YOUR questions. When I say YOUR, I mean, I've seen so many people looking for particular information by searching Google/Yahoo/Bing via the Momma Findings Feedjit.

This Week we look at:

-Is Emergen-C safe to give to children?
-Can a 7 year old drink Emergen-C?

DEFINITELY! Check out my review of the Kids Emergen-C vitamin drinks! With cold & flu season just around the corner and kids in school, this will definitely help you stay healthy this season.

-Playroom Sherlock Game Instructions

I'm glad you asked! It took awhile for us to understand the instructions until we dove right in and played the game. After that, the kids found it really easy! The Sherlock Memory Game has been reviewed by my 5 and 7 year old and myself.

It's a memory game, remember that.

1. Shuffle cards, and place the deck in the middle of the table.

2. Place 8 cards around the deck, face up.

3. Let your little ones memorize and study the pictures.

4. Turn them over face down.

5. One player places the Sherlock card next to any of the cards in the circle.

6. First player tries to guess/remember what that picture is.

7. If answered correctly Sherlock card moves in the direction and number stated on the answered card. Player keeps the "won" card.

8. If answered incorrectly, players turn is over. Distribute empty spots with new cards, Re-study the cards, and 2nd player's turn begins.

8. Repeat the process.

9. First person to collect 6 cards WINS!

That's it for this week, check back next Wednesday for more questions from my FeedJit. You have Questions, Momma Has Answers!

Chinese Food Anytime with Wanchai Ferry GIVEAWAY

Tuesday, August 18, 2009 188 comments

Some nights Hubby and I get that late night craving for Chinese Food. With three small children it's so hard to go out to eat, but Wanchai Ferry makes it easy with their new frozen entrées.

Each frozen entrée has all the ingredients needed to prepare a great-tasting, complete Chinese meal for 2 in only 14 minutes! They come in five delicious flavors including Orange Chicken, Shrimp Lo Mein, Spicy Garlic Chicken, Sweet & Sour Chicken and Sweet & Spicy Shrimp. Additionally, all of the entrees have no added MSG!

Thanks to My Blog Spark, I had the opportunity to check out the Orange Chicken, first hand, and let you guys in on what we thought!

I'm all about convenience. With three small children a very busy schedule I need a meal that can be made quickly, yet still taste great. In about 15 minutes the Wanchai Ferry meals will be cooked and ready on the table, just in time for you to head out the door for Soccer practice.

Other than the easy preparation, we really loved the quality of the meal! The chicken was crispy and the sauce mixed in perfectly with the rice. This is definitely chinese restaurant quality food without the hassle of taking the whole family out.

Momma Improvements

It was really hard for me to find something I DIDN'T like about Wanchai Ferry meals, however, after serving everyone at the table I realized we didn't have enough. One frozen meal will not feed a family of five. You really need two packs or prepare a separate side such as an extra veggie to have enough.

All in all, these easy-to-make meals are perfect for that midnight snack I mentioned earlier, just Me, Hubby, and our Jammies!

Buy It

You can purchase your very own Wanchai Ferry meals in your grocer's frozen food section and don't for get to print out your $1.50 off coupon before you head out the door.

WIN IT!

One lucky reader will win a Wanchai Ferry "Stay-At-Home" prize pack which includes:

- Two coupons
- Asian inspired meal set

It's a Battle Ground Worth Preserving

Friday, August 14, 2009 5 comments

I was born and raised in Baytown, TX, just minutes from the location where Texas won it's independence. I studied the events of the Battle of San Jacinto as a young child, taking for granted the rich history that lay in my own back yard.

Now that my children are entering Elementary age and we've moved BACK home after years of being away, it's extremely important to me, as a parent, that they learn about this powerful event and how it shaped the State of TX and revolutionized America.

Important Details:

The Battle of San Jacinto was fought on April 21, 1836. The Texian army consisted of approximately 900 men under the command of General Sam Houston. The Mexican army consisted of approximately 1,300 men under the command of Mexican President Antonio López de Santa Anna.

The Battle began at approximately 4:30 p.m. when the Texians, advancing under cries of “Remember the Alamo! Remember Goliad!” attacked the Mexican encampment. The Battle lasted just 18 minutes, although the slaughter continued for hours. Only nine Texans were killed or mortally wounded. Mexican soldiers killed numbered 630. More than 700 Mexican soldiers were taken prisoner.

The Battle of San Jacinto avenged the massacre of Texan soldiers at the Alamo (March 6, 1836) and Goliad (March 27, 1836), and gave Texas its independence from Mexico. The Battle also opened the door for the westward expansion of the United States.

A Battle won in a mere 18 minutes. Fascinating.

There is a new battle being fought on this site and it's the fight over the Road that leads to the San Jacinto Monument, the world's tallest monument tower where you see children doing this:

My 7-year-old son, Zachary, his first time on the observation deck

And seeing the Battle Ship Texas:

So what happened to Battle Ground Road? It's now Independence Parkway as part of an effort pushed by Harris County Commissioner Sylvia Garcia partnered with Project Stars. This economic development group is hoping to promote historical tourism. What concerns me as a Mom, is the that money tourism seems to be more important than the history of it all. Battle Ground Rd. has ALWAYS been Battle Ground Rd. How will a name change effect a marketing campaign for historical tourism? Does it?

Independence Parkway or Battle Ground Road?

As a very proud Texan and now Baytownian, I stand firm in preserving the Battle of San Jacinto and the Roads that lead us there.

Crayons, Pencils, Paper, NAILPOLISH?

2009-2010 School Supplies List

Kindergarten:

Dry Erase markers
Markers
Crayons
Manila drawing paper
Scissors, blunt
Copy paper
Black 3-ring binders
Nail polish
Insertable plastic dividers
Colored pencils
Gallon-size baggies
Quart-size baggies
Facial Tissue
Glue sticks
Liquid glue, 4 oz.

Old-School-Momma-Thinks-Supplies-Are-Expensive-SAY-WHAT?!!

Any Momma can look at a list like that and notice, right away, that nail polish definitely isn't something that is needed for Kindergarten, but this 5-year-old thinks otherwise:

Meet Abby. She is your regular 5-year-old who likes dancing, coloring, and watching TV. Kindergarten is her next stop on her way way to Hollywood... or so she thinks. (She started Kindergarten LAST year in NC, but couldn't attend due to different cut off dates once we moved.)

Somehow, the sweet girl who liked computer games, reading, and playing at the park turned into this demanding Fashion Diva when we went shopping for school clothes. Her Elementary, this year, does not require uniforms so we are fighting the battle Budget Vs. Fashion.

Nail polish was, apparently, number one on her list when it comes to Back-to-School shopping so you can imagine the fit that came out of that sweet mouth when I told her we needed to concentrate on clothes, underwear, socks, supplies, lunchbox, etc. We would NOT be buying nail polish, especially when Grandma brought out her case of gazillion colors for us to choose from for our nail salon session with Aunt Mona (a treat I thought she'd love after the shopping was done).

A point of understanding was reached from what I gathered. I mean, I'm a cool Mom. I thought we could enjoy a day of shopping. I'd quietly laugh when she picked a funky outfit. We would play fashion show in the dressing room and then stop in somewhere for ice cream and marvel at our finds.

WRONG!!!!

Hate it.
Uh No.
Never gonna wear that.
Don't think so.

Seriously, these sweet words came out of my daughter's mouth as if she was Queen Abby, on her throne and READY to rule the school!

Not if I have anything to do with it!

It took all I had to NOT leave her right there where she stood, but instead paid for my son's clothes (who's only request was for me to buy him lots of socks). We ran through the rain, to the car, and when we arrive home I explained to her she would be getting nothing for the school year, but secretly planned to pick out her clothes myself and have them ready the morning school starts, after she apologized for such rotten behavior. What did she say?

I'm gonna starve myself for TWO WEEKS! *crosses arms*

Yeah. She ate an hour later. Still no clothes.

Off to School with "I'm Your Bus" - School Supplies Giveaway

Monday, August 10, 2009 227 comments

I remember it like it was yesterday.

My son was heading to Kindergarten just 2 years ago and my Momma heart just couldn't bare putting this sweet child on a School Bus. It wasn't an option, as we were a one car family and had to take advantage of bus transportation. I knew he would get used to it, but being an overly anxious child with OCD.... he didn't.

Every day, for months, he came home crying. My heart broke into pieces over and over each time I saw a tear run down his face. Eventually he got used to it. I, often, wonder if there was anything else I could have done to help him overcome this fear and anxiety about riding the bus.

That's why I was so excited when I discovered this book:

About:

Get ready for a rip-roaring, rhyming ride that celebrates all things drivin' with a special spotlight on a kid's four-wheeled best buddy--his school bus! When you're a kid, your school bus can be your very best friend. Morning, noon, and nighttime, too, that golden buddy is at your service. Ready to drive you and your friends to and from school!

I’m Your Bus by Marilyn Singer is helping us get ready for school this year. My daughter is entering Kindergarten this year and I've been reading this book with my three children. They just love seeing "The Bus" with his own personality. With every flip of the page, children can get a first hand look at what a Bus would say and how a Bus would act. My daughter just laughed at the thought of "The Bus" hanging with his friends (other vehicles) in between pick-ups and drop-offs.

If you're a worried Momma when it comes to putting your children on the bus this year this is the book for you! The pictures reel in your child's imagination and help ease that "First Day on the Bus" anxiety.
