The Hunt for Dinosaurs with Max Spaniel GIVEAWAY

Friday, August 7, 2009 Leave a Comment

We are anxiously waiting for the 2009-2010 school year to begin. My daughter enters Kindergarten and is so elated! We've been practicing our reading and being the competitor that she is, Abby is trying to read books that her 7 year old brother is reading.

How do I raise a child who loves to read? Well, I owe a large part of this success to Early Reader books. These books challenge my child when she isn't quite ready for chapter books.

I was ecstatic to learn about a new book called, Max Spaniel by illustrator David Catrow.

About the Book:

Max is no ordinary dog. He is a great hunter! His prize of choice? Dinosaurs! But Max simply can’t hunt dinosaurs inside. For that, he must go on a true adventure to the unexplored wild of the backyard. As this zany canine prowls the yard, he encounters bicycles, toys, a rake, and a gardening hose. But to Max, the intrepid dinosaur hunter, these items are no mere playthings and grooming implements–they are dinosaur bones! Piece by piece, the bloodhound puts together a towering display of dinosaurian strength that he is sure will strike fear into the hearts of any trespassers!

From David Catrow, beloved illustrator of the energetic Doggone Dogs and I Ain’t Gonna Paint No More, comes an equally entertaining picture book for young adventurers! Catrow’s text is simple and sparing, allowing his fantastic illustrations to shine brilliantly. The sketch and watercolor artwork is colorful and alive with movement and silliness.

My 5-year-old daughter and I read this book together. It makes me so proud to hear her read and sound out each word. If she couldn't figure out what a certain word was she simply looked around the page to give her hints. The pictures and words are laid out perfectly for a young reader.

One other thing I really liked is the fact that it's a hardback book. There's nothing like having a 2-year-old tear up those beloved books.

This is the perfect fast-paced read for children who are ready to get up and go! Catrow’s design makes this book fantastic both for a read-aloud storytime and for beginning readers who aren’t quite ready for chapter books.

We're getting ready for school and brushing up on our reading! If you are too, come along the journey with us at My Sippy Cup Runneth Over where you'll see pictures, boo-hoo Momma stories, and learn all about the anxiety my children go through as the first day of school approaches.

Books are the best! With 3 grandchildren (all completely different in every way) I find that bringing books when I visit can unite US and I have something with which I actually bond with them on each one's level. I love that the books are hard covered. I teach them to appreciate the feel, the look and of course the content. Loe the covers and illustrations.

We're going to practice our school nights and school mornings routines the week before school starts. Hopefully this will make it smoother on the 1st few days.

This looks like a really fun book for my niece - she's about to turn 6 and start 1st grade. I read to her and her brother every night - a favorite right now is the Charlie & Lola book: "But Excuse Me, That is My Book." Both kids also have work sheets that the school department sent out for them to work on over the summer. I think they're ready for back-to-school. I know their mom is!
Thanks for the chance to win this book!

This is our first year of school, my son is starting Kindergarten in a few weeks! We have most of our stuff already. He loves to read (and is quite good at it already). We have all the Dr.Seuss books and just picked up a pack of books at Kohl's with titles like Biggest, Strongest, Fastest and What Would You Do With a Tale Like This?. Both of my young kids love animal books. We have pretty much already started school, doing some of the lessons... kind of easing our way into it so it won't be such a big deal come September 1st.
