We Choose Simplicity

Sunday, November 2, 2008 Leave a Comment

Okay, so today was not our normal Sunday.

The time change has us out of whack, so much so that it's clearly becoming a problem. You see, Brian and I were born and raised in Central Time. When we moved here to Charlotte we had to adjust to Eastern time. Yes, we've been here a year, but Eastern time really sucks! We haven't gotten used to it and daylight savings time keeps screwing with us. So, yeah.. Our Sunday was a bit weird no less.

Well, if you don't know by now, we are moving BACK to good ole' Central Time on Thursday. I am besides myself with giddyness over it all to be back in Memphis. My children will no longer head to school in darkness only to see the sun come up an hour into their school day. Our early start time is ridiculous!

I will miss their school though. The teachers and staff are amazing. I will miss my friends that I've made. They have made my last few months here brighter. I will miss the dynamic-ness (Yes, I made that word up) of Charlotte. It's probably the most amazing city I've ever lived in with an upbeat culture, diversity, and educational emphasis. Uptown really takes you to a mini New York City with hot dog vendors, day time joggers, and business people walking side by side.

We choose simplicity though. Since we've lived here, it's been everything BUT. The area I'm in is very materialistic, very beauty driven, and very.. don't get mad at me Southpark.... selfish. I haven't met many people willing to do for others. I haven't met many people seeing anything OUTSIDE their Lexus SUV and 300,000.00 house. I don't see normalcy of Sunday Church, Family lunch, and Yardwork (hiring a lawn company to do that for you doesn't count). I don't feel like this is a community willing to relax outside the hustle and bustle.

I know, if you are a Charlottean, you'll probably bash me on this one, but I want normalcy back. I can't wait to see my old friends, go jogging with my girly girl Dionne, volunteer in the nursery at church, take a nap on Sunday afternoons, go to a grocery store that has more food aisles than wine aisles, and see kids playing catch outside. I don't ever see that in this beautiful neighborhood I live in. It's almost like it'll upset the Home Owners association if you use your own yard or street to play. It's so odd.

I'm awaiting something wonderful with this move back. I can feel it.
